5 summer blockbusters you need to know about
The summer holidays are fast approaching which usually means visiting grandchildren. And that usually means a trip (or three) to the movies. Luckily, there are a smorgasbord of great films for kids out this summer. Better yet they are fun for adults as well. So get ready for some laughs, adventure and actions with our list of top films to lookout for this summer.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 out November 20
The third film instalment of the popular young adult books is sure to excite the teenaged grandchildren. There’s action, there’s lessons to learn, there’s romance and most off all there’s a kick-ass heroine Katniss, played by Jennifer Lawrence. Set in a dystopic world where children must fight to the death in the “Hunger Games”, Katniss plans to gather the masses and stage a revolution. One for the older kids due to dark themes but an entertaining action film/
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day out on December 4
We’ve all had our bad days where we wished we just stayed in bed. A young boy Alexander wakes up with gum in his hair which sets the tone for his entire day; things go from bad to worse to ‘worser’. His family, including parents played by Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner, don’t offer Alexander much sympathy as they are going through their own “terrible, horrible, no good, very bad” day.
Paddington out December 11
A chance to share your childhood with your grandkids with a trip to see the filmic reimagining of the world’s favourite British bear, Paddington. With his red hat, battered briefcase and iconic duffle coat, the bear originally hailing from Peru finds himself lost and alone at Paddington station. That is until he meets the Brown family who heed the label around his neck – “Please look after this bear. Thank you.” A heart-felt movie for anybody who has ever had a teddy bear and wondered what it would be like if they were real. Remember to bring the marmalade!
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb out on December 26
Funny-man Ben Stiller is back to all sorts of mayhem in the third instalment of Night at the Museum franchise. When the magic power of The Tablet of Ahkmenrah threaten to die out, Stiller must travel the world, uniting with old favourites and new friends along the way to save the magic before it is gone forever. For all those who were enchanted with the first two – the younger grandchildren for sure - it is sure to deliver again.
The Penguins of Madagascar out on January 1
The animated Madagascar trilogy captured all the young ones hearts with the talking animals from the zoo aching to break out. But the animals who stole the show were the cheeky but intelligent spy team of penguins. Now the wacky birds have their very own movie. Expect nothing less than diabolical scheming, crazy action sequences and uproarious jokes as these penguins attempt to save the world.
