6 old-schools skills that are dying
It was only a few decades ago that everyone possessed these skills, but now they’ve all but disappeared. Let’s bring them back… because society desperately needs it.
1. Sewing more than a button
With our throwaway culture that sees clothes being disposed of every season, sewing, darning and basic tailoring skills is a lost art. Where we, and the generation before us, could make our own clothes, most kids these days don’t even know how to thread a needle.
2. Dancing like the stars
There was none of this unsavoury bump-and-grind “dancing” in the olden days; it was about impressive moves on the dance floor. From the twist to the fox trot, younger people could learn a lesson or two from the real movers and shakers.
3. Getting dolled up
Remember when everyday was an event? Even if you were just popping down to the shops you made sure you looked your best, or at least you made sure to look presentable! Remember dress codes – hats, gloves, ties and so forth?
4. Memorising important details
These days there’s no need to actually retain any information when all it takes is a quick Google search on our smartphones to answer whatever question we want.
5. Writing in cursive
There was once a time where a gorgeous flourish of the pen was a highly desirable trait but today, it’s all about how fast you can type.
6. Basic home maintenance
Sink broken? Need to add in some lights? These were all jobs that you were once expected to know how to do. Today people call someone for every little thing home maintenance job.
