This empty seat wasn’t the tribute many thought it was
There was one person whose absence was deeply felt at the royal wedding – Prince Harry’s mother, Diana.
And while there were many touching tributes to the late Princess of Wales – including Meghan’s bouquet of forget-me-nots, which was Diana’s favourite flower – many viewers mistakenly thought this was one of them.
People took to social media to point out how a seat was left empty in the front pew, next to Prince William – with many attributing the empty seat as a gesture in memory of Diana.
However, the empty seat had nothing to do with a tribute to Diana.
The reason nobody was sitting in the seat was because no one is allowed to sit in front of the Queen.
“I’ve seen some reports about the spare seat by Prince William in the chapel as having being left in memory of Princess Diana,” journalist Rebecca English tweeted.
“It wasn’t empty for that reason. The seat in front of the Queen is always left empty, I am told by BP [Buckingham Palace].”
English added: “She needs to be seen — and the seat she was sitting in today is her favourite seat in that chapel, apparently!”
