"What a joy": Richard Wilkins meets brand new grandchild

Richard Wilkins has revealed he met his new granddaughter for the first time.

It follows just days after his daughter, Rebecca, welcomed the sweet newborn into the world with husband James Bateman.

"What a joy to meet my brand new granddaughter, Abigail Rose Wilkins Bateman — how perfect. Congratulations Bec, James and big sister Bella #granddaddypappabear," Wilkins gushed in a beautiful tribute to Instagram.

“Oh my heart is melting. Just beautiful my friend."

Wilkins revealed his daughter Rebecca had given birth to her second baby on Weekend Today.

"I became a granddad for the second time, on Thursday," he shared with co-hosts Maddern and Sophie Walsh.

"My beautiful daughter Becky and her husband James had a beautiful little daughter, Abigail Rose Wilkins. Becky, I love you, darling. I'm so proud of you."

Wilkins has five children from previous relationships but has remained adamant they have all remained close and do not use the “half-sibling” or “step-sibling” term.

He also praised Rebecca for being the "glue" that holds them together.

"We've never referred to them as 'half-brothers' and 'step-brothers' and things like that … There's just so much love between them all," he told 9Honey last year.

"They make me a better person and I live for them and I'm proud of the fact I've been able, over a few years now, to put them through good schools and to provide for them and to have a sort of a safe, loving environment for them all to grow up and thrive in.

“I'm just enormously proud and happy that they're all so wonderful."
