$6 Coles red wine wins international award

Looking for a great-tasting, expert-approved and internationally renowned red wine that won’t break the bank? All you need is $6.

St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon, sold exclusively at Coles-owned liquor stores, was pitted against some of the world’s most lauded labels at the Melbourne International Wine Competition and came out on top. The budget bottle of red was awarded an unprecedented gold rating by every single judge, leading the body to create a whole new standard, known as “double gold”.

“A win like this shows that our exclusive wine brands can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the market, and is a testament to the incredible work our suppliers do in making these wines,” Head of Coles wine sourcing, Bob Paulinski, told The Australian.

The new accolade comes less than a year after the supermarket chain’s $5 James Busby Big & Bold Shiraz 2015 won the title of best wine under $20 from Australia and New Zealand at the Winestate Wine of the Year Awards.

And Coles isn't the only one boasting big quality on a tiny budget. Aldi has become known for its award-winning, affordable wines, including a $5 rosé which took out a Blue Gold medal at the Sydney International Wine Competition.

Have you tried any of these budget bottles of wine? What did you think of them? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
