Homemade baklava

This sweet, nutty, flaky dessert is a staple in many Greek and Turkish homes and is a lot simpler to make than it looks.

Serves: 18

Ingredients:

Method:

  1. After preheating your oven to 180°C, line a 20cm by 30cm baking pan with butter.
  2. In a bowl, mix nuts and cinnamon and set to side.
  3. Unroll your filo pastry and cut stack to the size of your baking dish. Cover with damp cloth.
  4. Take two sheets of pastry and place in dish. Butter the top.
  5. Take three tablespoons of nut mi and sprinkle atop.
  6. Top with two more filo sheets. Repeat until you’ve used all ingredients.
  7. Cut your stack into diamond shapes.
  8. Bake until crispy and golden (about 50 minutes.)
  9. As baklava bakes, boil water and sugar until dissolved.
  10. Add in honey and peel of lemon and allow to simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
  11. Remove from heat to cool and discard lemon peel.
  12. Once syrup has cooled, take baklava out of oven and top with syrup.
  13. Allow to cool uncovered.
