3 steps to build a herb garden
Make this your most sustainable year yet with your very own herb garden.
Using herbs in your cooking is a great way to add flavour without calories…
- Parsley: Add to a green salad or a homemade tabouli.
- Mint: make your own summer drinks and add fresh mint
- Chives: add a mild onion flavour to scrambled eggs
- Basil: the basis for a delicious bruschetta along with fresh tomato and onions.
- Rosemary: adds flavour to roast lamb or chicken
Building your own herb garden takes just a few simple steps…
1. Choose somewhere sunny (at least six hours sun each day is ideal) in a well drained spot.
2. Give the soil a good dig over, removing any grass or weeds from the area; then add some compost.
3. Give the plants a little bit of water before placing in the soil.
Water your herbs regularly, and once established pick them regularly to encourage more growth…
The team from the Masters Home Improvements have some handy tips for the budding herb gardener:
- Dig the soil in the autumn to loosen it up after the summer growing season; then dig it again in early spring to remove stones and weeds before you plant again.
- Not sure how to plant seeds? Try sowing them twice the depth of the seed’s own thickness.
- Transplant seedlings in the late afternoon or on an overcast day, to avoid the heat of the sun.
