7 tips for smarter cleaning – that will surprise even the most domesticated goddesses out there

Work smarter, not harder with these 7 simple tips for cleaning your home.

Clean a garbage disposal with vinegar

Those contraptions can get a bit smelly and will need a regular clean out to remove grease and grime. Grab some white vinegar and make yourself an ice cube tray of frozen vinegar ice cubes. Throw them down your disposal and turn it on to grind them up. Follow this with a glass or two of cold water to finish the job.

Scrub your glass cookware with foil

Those bits of burnt-on food are hard to remove from your glass casserole dishes aren’t they? Not any more – just roll up a ball of foil, drizzle with dishwashing liquid and use it to scrub them clean.

Clean a fan with a pillowcase

Fans can look clean underneath but the tops can be a dusty mess. To avoid the dust going everywhere when cleaning them, just throw an old pillowcase over each blade one at a time. Pull the case slowly off the blade and the dust will stay safely inside.

Clean your coffee grinder with rice

If your coffee grinder could do with a spring clean, just throw half a cup of uncooked white rice through. Toss out the rice powder and the coffee remnants will go with it. Wipe your grinder clean with a damp cloth.

Remove fur with a rubber glove

If your pet leaves fur on your sofa or rug, remove it by rubbing it gently with a dampened rubber glove.

Clean your chopping board with fresh lemon

If you’ve got a smelly or stained plastic chopping board, squeeze the juice of a lemon all over it. Use the cut side of the lemon to rub the board, and then allow it to sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with hot water and allow to air dry.

Clean your drains with baking soda

Unclog a blocked or slow drain by pouring in half a cup of baking soda, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Place a damp cloth over the drain and leave for five minutes before pouring down the water from a just-boiled kettle.
