How to make your own cleaning wipes
Wipes are very convenient around the home for mopping up spills or cleaning. But they can also be expensive, and many contain harsh chemicals. Why not consider making your own refillable wipes instead?
You will need:
- A 10-cup large plastic food storage container
- Extra-large roll of good quality paper towels
- Electric drill with ½-inch drill bit
- Electric knife
- Liquid measuring cups
- Cleaning solution (see recipe below)
How to:
1. Use the drill to make a half-inch hole in the middle of the container’s lid.
2. Take your paper towel roll, and without removing the outer plastic wrap, use your electric knife to cut the roll in half to make two shorter rolls. This may take one to two minutes to get through the paper towel and the internal cardboard tube.
3. Remove the plastic wrapper and place one of the rolls into the plastic storage container. The second roll can be set aside to use as a refill later.
4. Now pour three cups of the cleaning solution over the top of the paper towel.
5. Pop the lid on the container and leave overnight to absorb the solution.
6. Open the container and gently remove the wet cardboard tube from the middle and throw out.
7. Find the end of the paper towel from the centre and pull this through the hole in the lid. Replace the lid.
8. Your wipes are now ready to use.
Homemade cleaning wipes recipes
General Surface Cleaning Recipe:
- 1 ½ cups white vinegar
- 1 ½ cups water
Disinfectant Cleaning:
- ¼ to ½ cup pine cleaning solution
- 2 ½ to 2 ¾ cup water
