How to make decorate mugs with the grandkids
Here’s a great craft project that you can do with the grandkids. Each child can personalise their very own mug that they can keep at your house and use each time they visit. Follow our step-by-step guide below.
What you’ll need:
- Plain white mugs
- Sharpie markers (oil based are best)
How to:
- Choose a theme: it could be a gift for Mother’s or Father’s Day, a mug to hold their Easter eggs, or just a one off design that they can call their very own.
- Clean your mugs: to remove any oil from your fingers, give them a wipe over with a clean cloth. Try to avoid touching them too much with your fingertips whilst drawing on them.
- Draw the design: now is the time to get creative. It could be a quote, a picture, a self-portrait – anything goes! It’s a good idea to go over your design twice to stop it from fading over time.
- Dry the mug overnight: this will help set the design in place.
- Double bake your mug: place your mug in the oven on a lined baking tray while it is turned off, then heat to 220°C. Bake the mug for 30 minutes and then turn the oven off, leaving the mug inside until the oven is cold. Then heat the oven again to 220°C and bake for a further 45 minutes, allowing it to cool again. This will avoid any cracks in the mugs as well as set the designs in place.
- Wash your “designer” mugs in warm soapy water rather than the dishwasher to keep the picture in place.
Note: colours may fade or change slightly when baked.
