If you’re planning a garage sale, knowing how to maximize your potential for success means you’re far more likely to shift the goods AND make a profit. Try employing these nine easy strategies for successful sales.

  1. Be friendly – Striking up a conversation with buyers is a great you to open up a dialogue and even find out if there’s anything they’re specifically looking for.
  2. Look for clues – Pay attention to what people are wearing and checking out when they first arrive. This will help you decipher what they’re on the lookout for.
  3. Share some history – If there’s a story to tell about a particular item, tell it! Garage sale frequenters usually love hearing all about the unique backstory behind a piece they’re interested in.
  4. Suggest improvements – If a potential buyer is eyeing off a piece of furniture, try suggesting some simple upgrades like a coat of paint of new fixtures. It might just seal the deal.
  5. Keep it low key – Don’t go overboard with the chat and suggestions. If you feel like you’re overwhelming someone, you may just be.
  6. Think about layout – If you’re midway through the day and still holding on to some items, think about consolidating everything in one spot for easy access.
