7 things you shouldn’t be storing in the fridge

Some food items, despite our instincts saying otherwise, are at their prime when stored at room temperature. And while it’s hard to break habits, here’s a list of things you should take out of the refrigerator and put back in the pantry.

Potatoes:

You might not have known that putting potatoes in the fridge adversely affects the flavour of potatoes. It’s best to store them in the pantry in paper bags, where they should last for about three weeks.

Bread:

The fridge dries out bread, so here’s what you should do: keep at room temperature the bread you’ll eat within four days and freeze the rest.

Tomatoes:

Unfortunately, tomatoes can become mealy when stored in the fridge. You’re best to leave them on the counter, out of a plastic bag. If you want them to ripen faster, leave them in a paper bag. When they’re ripe, they should last for about 3 days.

Batteries:

Despite what you’ve heard, storing batteries in your fridge is not going to extend their life. Keep them in the drawer with your TV remote where they belong.

Onions:

Keep onions in the pantry in their mesh bags, as they allow for circulation. But keep them well away from potatoes, as the moisture and gases the starchy veggies emit can cause onions to rot.

Garlic:

Similar to onions, garlic is best stored at room temperature. Store it loose so air can move freely around it.

Coffee:

Moisture can affect the flavour of coffee beans and ground coffee, so keep both away from the fridge. Leave in a dark cupboard in an airtight container.
