Nick Kyrgios hints at retirement bombshell
Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has hinted he could retire and walk away from the sport completely if he wins a grand slam in 2023.
Kyrgios enjoyed a breakout season after winning the doubles title at the Australian Open with his good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis.
He reached the Wimbledon final where he lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets.
Currently playing in Dubai in the inaugural World Tennis League, along with Djokovic, Iga Swiatek, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alexander Zverev, Kyrgios admitted the stress is getting too much.
“Hopefully, I can win a slam and just retire,” Kyrgios said.
Asked whether he would be happy with a similar performance next year, Kyrgios said: “Would I sign again? Honestly, I don’t know about it.
“It took a lot of hard work this [2022] season, a lot of discipline and it seems the better you do, everyone wants a bit more of you and it becomes more stressful.
“But I had a lot of fun this season. And I’m finally just proud to say I made a slam final and started to meet some expectations.
“I had a lot of fun, I enjoyed it, definitely felt better off and on the court.”
Kyrgios’ shock announcement comes as Netflix dropped a new trailer for the ‘Break Point’ tennis series which begins in January, days before the Australian Open.
