"Visionary project" announced to honour the Queen
The Sydney CBD will be home to a new tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet revealed that a new square will be established to honour the late monarch.
Located on Macquarie Street on the eastern side of the CBD, the area will be known as ‘Queen Elizabeth II Place’, which Mr Albanese described as an “appropriate and fitting tribute”.
“This is a visionary project,” he said.
“Regardless of where people stand on other issues, Queen Elizabeth II is someone who is admired and respected.
“The naming of this place in her honour is an appropriate and fitting tribute.”
To create Queen Elizabeth II Place, which will be an outdoor space connecting to the Domain parklands, parts of the NSW Registrar-General’s Building will be demolished.
“In the 60s and 70s they just built these things, and they’ve brutalised the great, historic Macquarie Street,” Mr Perrottet added.
The Premier said the project would be part of a larger 20-year plan to revitalise the precinct and make it into a tourist attraction.
"We need to make the most of the parkland that is here ... in The Domain leading down to the botanic gardens and down to the harbour foreshore," Mr Albanese added.
"This is a visionary project and I congratulate the Premier on coming up with this idea... this is a great global city, and we need to make the most of it."
