5 great cruises in colder climates

Tropical cruises are nice, but they’re not the only option. There is a range of less-warm but equally as luxurious cruise options available. We take a look at five of the most amazing colder climate cruises on the market. All you have to do is start making an excuse to save for your ticket.

1. Antarctica (above)

Head to the ends of the earth (literally) with a cruise to Antarctica. Trips to Antarctica typically depart from Buenos Aires where you catch a flight to Ushuaia and head off from distant locales like the Falkland and South Georgia Islands. Nothing beats an Antarctica cruise for nature-lovers and as you head around the southernmost point of the world you’ll be able to spot whales, albatrosses, penguins and leopard seals, all while observing the natural beauty of the glacial scenery.

2. Galapagos

The remote Galapagos Islands where Charles Darwin famously observed the unique wildlife that supported his evolution theory are a must for every traveller, and you shouldn’t be deterred by the cooler temperatures. Take a cruise to these beautiful islands and stroll around as you contemplate their amazing inhabitants and the huge role they’ve playing in the understanding of the world.

3. Alaska

The great things about Alaskan cruises is they typically give you access to everything you’d want to experience from a cold-weather cruise (icebergs, whales, snow-capped peaks) but at temperatures that are significantly more forgiving. Popular ports of call include Skagway, Ketchikan and Valdez and you will want to choose a cruise that gives you access to Glacier Bay National Park, the South Sawyer Glacier and the fjords in Tracy Arm. Some of these sights are too beautiful for your eyes.

4. Scandinavia

You owe it to yourself to experience the awe-inspiring fjords of Scandinavia at least once. Tours typically also incorporate Stockholm’s beautiful waterfront, and most trips will include multiple stops hitting Sweden, Norway and Finland. The beauty of the fjords and the rolling scenery are sights that will stay with you for years and have you making an excuse to come back as soon as possible.

5. The Arctic Circle

Casual cruise planners can be forgiven for feeling as though an Arctic Circle cruise will offer very similar delights as an Antarctic one, but these actually happen to be two very different trips. Visits to the Arctic Circle typically take in numerous locations and give you the chance to spot narwhals, polar bears and perhaps even witness the fabled Aurora Borealis, or bask in the midnight sun.
