The Aussie cities where parking is nearly the most expensive in the world

It shouldn’t come as a surprise when it’s revealed that Aussie’s are paying extortionate amounts for their day-to-day living, whether it’s covering the cost of rent and bills, the average person is under pressure.

And it seems that Australian’s are paying the most for parking too as according to Parkopedia’s 2019 Global Parking Index report, three Aussie cities are included in the list of top 5 most expensive 2-hour off-street (car parking) parking in the world.

Sydney is the highest out of all the cities, as it’s ranked number 2 with the average 2-hour off-street (carpark) putting Sydneysiders back close to $40. The most expensive city was New York, costing people a hefty AU$51.60.

Brisbane came in at third place at $30.35 and Melbourne in fifth, coughing up $29 for a few hours.

But it’s not all doom and gloom, as when it comes to on-street parking, Australia isn’t doing too terrible, despite Sydney still sitting at 7th place with people paying $10 for 2 hours.

“Australia retains its title as the most expensive country in the world for short-term off-street parking, with the USA remaining in second place,” said the report.

Melbourne and Sydney are among the global cities where off-street parking is more expensive than on-street prices.

“This trend is mirrored at country level in the USA, Australia and New Zealand, where the 2-hour off-street prices are more than 200 per cent higher than the on-street average,” it said.

“This is reflective of the reluctance of these city governments to raise the highly visible price of on-street parking.”
