Why you must check with beach lifeguards these school holidays
School holiday beachgoers have been warned of hundreds of sharks feeding in shallow waters off the coast of New South Wales.
A multitude of sharks were spotted north of Newcastle including great whites, bull sharks and whaler sharks.
The NSW government released footage of the mass feeding due to concerns they may target swimmers.
Swimmers have been advised to check with lifeguards these holidays and to avoid the water at dawn and dusk.
Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair told the Daily Telegraph it was “extremely important people take all the necessary precautions to remain safe”.
According to shark experts, it is uncommon for sharks to be feeding and swimming together in such large numbers.
Mr Blair said people going to the beach should avoid swimming in areas where there are baitfish.
