Australian tourist charged $40K for a meal in Vietnam
An Australian tourist has been ripped off to the tune of $40,000 by a restaurant in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City, local media reports.
The restaurant manager, Tran Tuan Minh, 22, is facing charges after he charged $39,544 to the visitor’s credit card. The meal is worth around $1146, the VN Express reports.
The 45-year-old tourist was told after dining with friends at Nightfall restaurant last August that there had been a glitch using his credit card and that he had to use another card to pay for the meal.
Both cards were repeatedly charged, leading a the bill being paid numerous times.
The tourist dropped his initial legal bid after he was reimbursed by the restaurant. However, police pursued the case, arguing that Minh knew he was overcharging the customer as he ordered a staff member to swipe the card repeatedly. He reportedly withdrew the money from a bank later.
The restaurant is now closed down.
