8 reasons everyone should drive the Great Ocean Road
Stretching almost languidly over Victoria’s coast line, the Great Ocean Road is one of the world’s most picturesque drives combining postcard-worthy coastal views with a lush, scenic setting. We’ve put together eight reasons why you have to experience this iconic drive at least once.
1. Twelve Apostles
There might only be eight of these stunning limestone formations left standing, but the Twelve Apostles are no less grand. Everyone needs to visit this national icon at least once in their life. And they’re not going to be around forever. With erosion at the base of the pillars occurring at a rate of approximately 2cm per year unfortunately they will be nothing but a memory one day.
2. Stunning rock formations
But it’s not just the Twelve Apostles that deserve all your attention as you’re winding around the Great Ocean Road. Make sure you leave time to observe some of the other natural wonders on the trip including the Blowhole, the intricately carved Grotto and what remains of the London Bridge. Admire these amazing natural formations that have been formed over a millennia.
3. Lush forests
Some of the greenery on offer in the Great Ocean Road is worth making the trek south in and of itself. Explore the Otway Ranges in Otway National Park with narrow valleys and high waterfalls plunging from amazing cliffs and venture to the gigantic tree ferns of Melba Gully. If you’re lucky you’ll maybe be able to notice the unforgettable sight of glow-worms illuminating the darkness.
4. Enchanting coastal towns
From charming Lorne, to the surf culture of Torquay and the quaint beautify of Port Fairy, the Great Ocean Road is imbued with towns to explore whether you’re looking for a casual lunch, romantic stroll or want to pick up a necklace to remind yourself of the trip. And these free towns are barely scratching the surface of the numerous possibilities this amazing highway has to offer.
5. The Great Ocean Walk
One little-known feature of the Great Ocean Road is the Great Ocean Walk, and while abandoning your vehicle may seem a tad counterproductive, it’s well worth it to experience the gorgeous fern gullies, rainforest, heathland and coastal estuaries. The Great Ocean Walk also allows you access to beautiful, remote locations along the road like Moonlight Head and Station Beach.
6. Food and wine
Oh and in terms of things to snack on, you’re spoilt for choice. From tiny pubs to amazing restaurants the Great Ocean Road gives you access to experience some of Australia’s most amazing modern cuisine. Make sure you leave plenty of time to enjoy the delicious flavours on offer on this amazing coastal highway and remember that you can walk it off when you’re finished your trip.
7. Australian wildlife
And who doesn’t love Australian flora and fauna? Keep your eyes on the lookout for dolphins on one side and kangaroos on the other and you work your way around this idyllic drive, which offers a range of moments that will cater for any animal lover. If you’ve got time it may also even be worth considering the very fun Great Ocean Road Wildlife Park, which has many cool exhibits.
8. Cape Otway Lightstation
This is another definite must-see. Built in 1848 by 40 stonemasons without the use of mortar or cement, Cape Otway is the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia. It offers sprawling views of the surrounds and also provides easy access to some unforgettable tourist attractions like Aboriginal cultural sites and WWII bunkers. Definitely one that you have to make time for!
