The real reason Dave Hughes' radio show was axed

An insider has revealed the real reason behind the sudden axing of 2Day FM's Hughesy, Ed and Erin breakfast show, just hours after it was announced that the show was being pulled off the air.

After three years on air, it was announced on Wednesday night that the show had come to an immediate end.

The breakfast hosts Dave Hughes, Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan shared a statement announcing their departure.

"We've loved our time together on 2DayFM Breakfast, however, due to some of our families living in different cities we are unable to commit to 2025, so with a heavy heart we are moving aside so 2DayFM can find the team to take them forward in Breakfast," the co-hosts said.

"We are so grateful to Sydney for their support, and to double the number of listeners in three years is something we are immensely proud of, and we will miss each and every one of them."

The axing seemingly came out of nowhere, with many wondering what prompted the sudden change.

Now, news.com.au claims that 2Day FM bosses had long been pressuring Hughesy to move to Sydney full time.

For years, the popular comedian had been commuting to Sydney from Melbourne, where his wife and kids are based.

Both Hughesy and his family had grown tired of the commute, and as a result, Hughesy informed executives at Southern Cross Austereo (the network that owns 2Day FM) that he wouldn’t be relocating to Sydney permanently, and therefore could not commit to another year on the breakfast show.

On top of the commuting issues, the popular radio show had a shocker in the latest round of radio ratings which were released last month.

The trio recorded just a 3.6 per cent audience share, a long way behind Sydney’s FM market leaders Kyle and Jackie O (14.1 cent) and Jonesy and Amanda (8.1 per cent).

News.com.au understands that Dave Cameron, Southern Cross Austereo’s Chief Content Officer, finally decided to bite the bullet and called a snap meeting with the breakfast hosts after Wednesday morning’s show to inform them the show would be cancelled.

The trio were told they could return for one final show on Thursday to say goodbye, but ultimately the hosts decided against it.

Image credits: 2Day FM / Instagram

“We thought he was good”: Chezzi Denyer gives emotional update on Grant Denyer’s injury

Chezzi Denyer has revealed her husband’s health condition in an emotional post to social media, showing just how difficult and painful the process has been for the Denyer family.

After Grant was rushed to hospital at the end of last month over a debilitating injury, Chezzi has been kind enough to give frequent health updates for caring supporters.

Grant had suffered an annular fissure, which is a tear in the lower disk of the back and described as “incredibly painful” by the family.

The injury was so horrific to the point it left Grant unable to sit and walk.

While supportive fans wait for better news, Chezzi has just opened up about the toll Grant’s injury has had on the Denyer family, sharing to social media a picture of her husband and their daughter on FaceTime while he sat in a hospital bed.

“She absolutely adores her Daddy and I know she misses him so much right now. I miss him too, and I only left his bedside about 4 hours ago to fly home,” Chezzi wrote on Tuesday night.

Further, Chezzi explained that although Grant had been discharged from hospital on Sunday, the Logie award winner had to be readmitted after “jumping the gun a little bit".

“We knew it was a stretch but wanted to see how he went. And then realised it was a bit too early. So back into hospital he went,” the caption read.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by chezzidenyer (@chezzidenyer) on Apr 2, 2019 at 12:43am PDT

The mother of two sympathised with families that have loved ones in hospital.

“I just want to send out massive telepathic hugs to everyone who has someone in hospital tonight. A big shoutout to everyone missing a parent or loved one tonight,” she wrote.

“I think sometimes we forget that life isn't always easy... And that's ok... And for my little family, we will count down the days until we can all head back down to Sydney to hang out with Daddy!”

The emotionally tolling post comes after a long week for the Denyer family, when Grant first injured his back on their property and was then rushed to hospital.

“He’s in a lot of pain and it’s really difficult to watch,” Chezzi confessed on 2Day FM radio following the event on Friday morning.

Grant explained the incident himself to his co-hosts as well on the radio program, saying: “I was down the paddock mate with my Akubra on, my flannos', just slamming away on a star picket with a huge sledgehammer and twang – away it went.”

Chezzi Denyer, the beloved wife of the much admired Grant Denyer, has shared a painful memory of her husband when he was dealing with strong medication.

Chezzi broke down in tears when she called into the 2Day FM breakfast show on Thursday morning, to discuss his 2008 Monster Truck accident that left her then-newly boyfriend with a broken back.

The near-fatal crash resulted in a struggle with prescription drugs, a time he speaks candidly about today.

The horrific accident found the podcast creator of Mummytimeco as his full-time caregiver, as she aided in nursing him back to health as soon as he returned home from hospital.

The talk show host recalls the impact the medication he was taking during his recovery was a “horrific” experience.

“The one thing that nobody ever tells you when you do an injury and the hospital never lets you go telling you, is that the medication is often worse than the actual injury itself,” he said on air.

View this post on Instagram

My lil’ mad fam bam

A post shared by Grant Denyer (@grantdenyer) on Dec 13, 2018 at 8:12pm PST

“I could barely walk. I would wake up from a horrific dream and go and try and find my wife thinking there was a home invasion and thinking that she was being sexually attacked. I would crawl along the floor to try and fight off attackers that just weren’t there.”

“I’d hallucinate where I couldn’t tell the difference between dreams and reality. The moment you close your eyes you go into your worst and most horrific fears and when you wake up you don’t know the difference between that being real or not,” he said.

Grant says after a few months he made the decision to no longer be reliant on painkillers, one that was made for the sake of healing properly.

He said it was “an ugly process that can do a lot of damage to a relationship. You tend to say things that you do not mean because you have no control over the roller coaster of emotions.”

The mother of two says she attended counselling sessions to heal from the ordeal.

“…He honestly believed he would never walk again and we had no real outside help. When we brought him home from hospital, I’m not a nurse, I didn’t know what I was doing,” she recalled on air.

In tears, she described how difficult it was to help Grant wean off his medication.

“Some of the things that we went through would test any relationship,” she said.

The painful memories the couple both recalled made them both audibly emotional.

“I said things that I had no control over,” the father of two said before saying, “I am so forever sorry for it.”

For Chezzi though, this relationship’s tough times were worth it to her in the end.

“I knew that I loved him.”

Last week, news broke that 2DayFM breakfast show co-host Em Rusciano was driving away staff because of her diva behaviour.

Now, Grant Denyer has made the first official comments about the tensions in the studio.

“I try not to get involved in that at all, I turn up, bring my A game and try my hardest,” Denyer told The Daily Telegraph.

“Em is handling the situation herself … I think you will have to talk to her about that.”

Denyer would not respond to questions asking if his fellow co-hosts, Em Rusciano and Ed Kavalee, were talking to each other off-air.

“(There are no tensions) not with me, I am good,” he said.

“We are three different personalities, we come at it from totally different angles. We are three strangers, who are still gelling.”

However, Denyer, who received a Gold Logie nomination this week, has said that he was committed to making the show a success.

“I want this to work, I am in it to win it,” he said.

“The last four (teams) have failed.

“I know it is no small task to take a show which has been at the bottom and turn it around, but I am up for the challenge.”

Last week, one source revealed that several people had left the breakfast show and others were looking for work.

“Things are at breaking point, people just cannot work with her (Rusciano’s) energy. There have been … casualties at the hands of Em Rusciano,” the source told The Daily Telegraph.

“The audio producer is now working on another show, the publicist is refusing to work with her and one of the producers has told the company that they are looking for other work.”
