"Not a day goes by": Lisa Curry's touching birthday message

Former Australian swimming champion Lisa Curry has touched hearts with an emotional tribute to her late daughter, Jaimi, on what would have been her 37th birthday.

Jaimi, the eldest daughter of Curry and her ex-husband, Ironman legend Grant Kenny, passed away in 2020 at the age of 33.

Curry, a three-time Olympian, took to Instagram to share a series of poignant family photos, capturing cherished moments and memories. "Happy birthday to our beautiful Jaimi. The day you were born changed our lives forever," she wrote.

Among the shared photos, one features a beaming Kenny holding newborn Jaimi, adorned in pink with big blue eyes. "Our little poppet dressed in pink of course with big blue eyes," Curry reminisced. "You may be gone from our sight, but never from our thoughts and heart."

Another touching image shows Jaimi as a baby with a cheeky grin, followed by a beautiful mother-daughter snap of Curry and Jaimi in her youth, and finally, a radiant Jaimi as an adult. The last photo, a sombre reminder of the daily reality for Curry, Kenny, and countless families who have lost loved ones, shows framed memories forever captured in photographs. "Not a day goes by... We all miss you... Happy Birthday, my love," Curry added, signing the post with "Mumma".

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lisa Curry AO (@lisacurry)

Jaimi's battle with an eating disorder spanned nearly two decades, culminating in her tragic death from multiple organ failure on September 14, 2020, with her devoted parents by her side. In a tearful 2022 interview with ABC's Australian Story, Curry recounted the heartbreaking moment Jaimi passed away. "If it's any consolation, we were able to be with her when she took her last breath," Curry said, recalling the profound bond of being present at both Jaimi's first and last breaths.

By her early 20s, Jaimi had confided in her family about her eating disorder, prompting them to seek treatment. Unfortunately, her struggle evolved into a battle with alcohol addiction, compounding her challenges. "The disordered eating turned into an addiction, so then she kind of had a triple whammy, you know, not eating, bingeing, and drinking, all at once," Curry revealed.

Despite her struggles, Jaimi possessed remarkable talents in cooking, photography, and styling. Curry lamented that Jaimi never recognised her own worth. "But she was. We could see it. She couldn't see it," Curry said.

Curry and Kenny, who were married from 1996 to 2017, also share two other children, daughter Morgan and son Jett. As they remember Jaimi on her birthday, the family continues to honour her memory and celebrate the joy she brought into their lives.

Images: Instagram

Sweet reason why Kochie wore lipstick live on air

David Koch wore bright red lipstick in an interview on Sunrise on Monday morning- all for a good cause.

The Sunrise host wore the bold colour while interviewing model Jett Kenny, the son of sporting greats Grant Kenny and Lisa Curry.

Jett also put on red lipstick mid-interview as part of the Lip-Stick It campaign - an initiative that encourages Aussie men to wear lipstick on May 11 to raise awareness and help raise funds for women’s mental health support services.

“Less than half of the women experiencing mental health are seeking help,” Jett said on Sunrise.

The initiative comes after the tragic death of Jett’s sister Jaimi, who had passed away three years ago from mental health issues.

Ever since then Jett had vowed to raise awareness and funding for the cause, and is now the inaugural ambassador for the Lip-Stick It campaign.

“Encouraging those people to just talk about it and having the strength that they might need to voice what they are going through. I think that was the biggest thing I found was they were so reserved, or she [Jaimi] was so reserved talking about her issues and her struggles”, Jett said.

He added that, although not everyone with mental health issues experiences the same thing, he wants to encourage women to “just speak about it”.

Kochie then told Jeff to “whack on the lippie”, as they talked about the campaign further.

“I was trying to [apply lipstick] the other day and it is quite difficult. I might look like the Joker while I do this,” Jett told Kochie.

“A lot of people think I look like the Joker without the lipstick,” Kochie quipped.

Jokes aside, Jett then told the Sunrise host how proud he was to launch the campaign and support the women in their lives.

“It’s our chance for us men to get behind the women that we love and support and show that we care,” Jett said.

“If all it takes is to put on some red lipstick to start a conversation, and talk about it, I feel like it’s the least we can do.

“It’s a big thing, not only for myself but for a lot of people. It could be happening to a person you work with, someone you know, but they you know – might not be talking about it because they don’t feel comfortable to do so,” he added.

Jaimi died on September 14, 2020, following an 18-year battle with alcohol addiction and an eating disorder.

She died at Sunshine Coast University Hospital and was surrounded by her family at the time of her death.

In late January, Lisa Curry posted an emotional tribute to her eldest daughter in honour of her memory.

Images: Sunrise on 7

Lisa Curry shares daughter Jaimi's dying wish

Lisa Curry has shared the dying wish of her daughter Jaimi that was unable to be fulfilled before her death.

In an emotional interview with Women's Weekly, the former Olympian remembered the life and dreams of her beloved daughter.

"Jaimi wanted to write a book to help others, but it was too late. We left it too late," the 60-year-old told the magazine.

"But I hope that, by being honest and knowing that Jaimi wanted to help others, we can help in some way, in some small way."

The revelation comes almost two years after Jaimi's death, as she passed away in 2020 at age 33 from an undisclosed health battle.

In Lisa's recently published memoir, Lisa: A Memoir - 60 Years of Life, Love & Loss, she revealed that Jaimi had been fighting a lot of personal demons before her untimely death.

While staying by her daughter's side until the very end, Lisa admitted that it was "exhausting" worrying about Jaimi, as she also had to care for her two other children: daughter Morgan, 31, and son Jett, 28, who she shares with ex-husband Grant Kenny.

"You can't live your life for one child. You have three children and they are all the world to you, and that's why I have to be really conscious of my self-care, so that I can be there for them and the grandchildren," Curry explained.

"But bloody hell it's hard. Morgan and Jett are really understanding."

In a previous interview with Today, Lisa said she will continue to tell both the good and bad sides of Jaimi's story to help others who may also be battling similar demons.

"Some people are struggling every single day. Their body, their mind, is screaming, but no-one is hearing. Then there is people like Jaimi who just can't get through," she said.

Despite the overwhelming grief, Lisa said she gets by knowing Jaimi's spirit is still around.

"She's never far away, you know. She's always around, somehow."

Lisa Curry speaks about daughter Jaimi Kenny's "red flags"

Olympian Lisa Curry has opened up about the “red flags” she saw in her late daughter Jaimi Kenny in the years leading up to her tragic passing at just 33.

Curry said her daughter was diagnosed with a “chemical imbalance” when she was a teen and died after “many years of ups and downs” with her health.

“I know people want to know why and how, but it’s not important at this time, or maybe ever, I don’t know,” she wrote.

“What I will say though is that Jeff (Butterworth) diagnosed her with a chemical imbalance 18 years ago when we started to see some tiny red flags.

“Sometimes, an individual, even adults like us, can disregard little red flags, thinking it doesn’t matter or won’t matter.”

Jaimi, the daughter of Curry and ironman Grant Kenny passed away on September 14 after a private health battle.

In the post published in the Happy Hormones Facebook group on Monday, Curry said she was still grappling with her eldest child’s death.

“We held Jaimi when she took her first breath and we held her as she took her last. I still can’t believe it, it doesn’t seem real,” she said.

“It’s given me the heaviest heart. Some days I can’t even get out of bed or function.”

She urged those in the group not to ignore their own “red flags” that she said could “add up to slowly erode your whole being … to the point where you may only be existing and not really living”.

The warning signs included “life’s small neglects” such as poor food choices, a lack of attention to stressful situations, being inactive, living with or around toxic people and how you interact with other people.

“Don’t wait until it’s too late to make changes … do it now while you can … starting right now,” she said.

“Recognise the little red flags. Don’t live your life in turmoil, regret or guilt.”

It has been widely reported Ms Kenny had struggled with depression and alcohol abuse in recent years following the death of her partner Lachy Crossley in 2017.

Her parents said in a statement confirming Ms Kenny’s passing in September she had “lost her battle with a long-term illness and passed away peacefully in hospital”.
