Sandra Sully and Angela Bishop reflect on 60 years of Network 10

Sandra Sully and Angela Bishop have reflected on their most memorable moments with Channel 10 as the network celebrates 60 years on the air.

As the network looks back on 60 years servicing and informing the country, two of their long-running powerhouses have looked back on their careers at Network 10.

Both Sully and Bishop have been fixtures of the 10 network since the 1990s, both carving out such influential roles within the Australian mediascape that they’ve earned Order Of Australia medals, honouring their work within the industry.

The two journalists have looked back at some of their most memorable moments in their careers, ranging from covering breaking international news, keeping industry secrets and their hardest interviews.

When asked about her most memorable news broadcasts, Sandra said that informing Australia about the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001 is something that will stick with her forever.

“News strikes without warning,” Sandra tells PEDESTRIAN.TV.

“I was the deer in the headlights and in the chair that night, and it all unfolded while we were live on air. So I had to go with it.”

Sully, who was part of the Ten Late News team at the time, said she remembers her broadcast on each anniversary of the devastating attacks.

“It’s something that is actually always with me,” she continued.

“September 11 every year is always a kind of sad time for me because we all thought World War Three was going to erupt that night, that what we were watching was the beginning of World War Three."

“And I don’t think generations these days could ever fully appreciate what that was like, because news is so instant now. They can get it all day, every day, on any platform. And so it’s hard for them to appreciate what actually happened that night, and the world’s moved on. For me, it was equally daunting, challenging and rewarding.”

When working in the media industry, one thing that comes with showbiz is keeping secrets, which is something Angela Bishop learned all too well in 2010 when Oprah Winfrey was planning her trip Down Under.

“I’ve never kept something more in the vault in my life,” Angela said with a laugh.

“Oprah rarely did interviews back then because at that time she had her show on every day, she just felt she didn’t need to, because people got to see her every day. I got a great one-on-one interview with her when she came out, and then I covered her tour.

“That was an absolute pinch me moment being interviewing her up on Hamilton Island when she arrived, as two koalas started having sex right next to us in the tree.”

While secret keeping is only part of Bishop's job, she has had decades of experience interviewing celebrities around the world.

And while all of her interviews are memorable, not all of them are for the right reasons, as she explained how she struggled interviewing Sacha Baron Cohen during his pressrun for Borat in 2006.

“He was in character the whole time, from when I met him to when it ended, and I had to keep up with him, just doing all of the Borat things that Borat does,” she explains.

At one point, Borat asked her: “Where is the journalist?” and when Angelia replied that she was the journalist, Borat feigned surprise.

“We say to let a woman be a journalist is like to let a monkey fly a plane,” he quipped.

Angela said of the infamous interview, “I just had to think on my feet and in the sand while there was people around, interacting with us and everything.”

Angela and Sandra both spoke candidly about why they've stayed with the network for so long, as Angela said, “It’s the cheekiness and the risk-taking nature of the network. It’s a bold place.”

“And it’s just family. I lost my husband back in 2017 to cancer and it was really a crucial part of my healing how much support I got from 10. It felt like family here, they really looked after me during that time and so did the viewers. Channel 10 viewers are quite something.”

Sandra added, “It’s always been the culture, and it’s always been the teamwork. Television news is the epitome of teamwork."

“I’m really thrilled, honoured, privileged to be a part of the 10 family and to have been there so long. I try not to think about how long it is, and the poor audience have to put up with me, but it has been an absolute joy, because 10 have always taken it to the edge. They’ve always redefined what television is in Australia. They’ve done it with irreverence and humour, but also a strong sense of ethics and respect for the audience.”

"What have I done?!" Sandra Sully opens up on her big Masked Singer reveal

Beloved TV personality Sandra Sully recently shared her candid experience of battling anxiety while participating in The Masked Singer Australia – one of the most anticipated and highly publicised reveals in the history of the show.

According to the Daily Mail, the 10 News presenter found herself regretting her decision to join the reality show, and contemplated ways to back out. “I literally broke down in tears after a singing lesson, thinking ‘what have I done?’,” she told the publication.

Then, in the midst of all this turmoil and anxiety, Sully had a pivotal moment after a singing lesson. Overwhelmed by self-doubt, she broke down in tears, questioning the wisdom of her choice to be on the show at all.

She repeatedly voiced her concerns to her husband, Symon Brewis-Weston, saying, "What have I done? I can't do it, I can't do it – what am I going to do?"

It was Brewis-Weston who provided her with the much-needed encouragement. He had initially convinced her to participate after years of declining offers from producers. He sternly advised her to stop spiralling into negativity, reminding her of the reasons she had said yes to the show and encouraging her to embrace the experience with a sense of fun. He told her, "Just have a bit of fun. No one's going to die, including you."

Sully took his advice to heart, realising that her anxiety was getting the best of her. She had a moment of self-reflection and decided to stop doubting herself.

Sully's big reveal as the Fawn character, designed by Tim Chappel, was a shock to the show's panellists Mel B, Abbie Chatfield, Dave Hughes and Chrissie Swan, who had not heard her sing during her more than 30-year career in news presentation.

Sully's lack of singing experience surprised not only the viewers but also her husband and friends, as she never sang in the shower and only had experience as a drummer in her primary school band. She humorously admitted, "I don't sing along in the car – I probably can now because I've shown Australia I can't sing. So we can all laugh out loud together as I also laugh at myself."

Relieved that her Masked Singer journey is over, Sully faced additional challenges beyond anxiety, including the need to constantly tell fibs to friends and colleagues in order to conceal her identity. She also grappled with claustrophobia, particularly once the heavy mask was placed on her head.

Describing the experience, she said, "Your whole head is ensconced like in a balaclava, and then you have to put this mask on and it's done up under your chin, and then tightened like a bike helmet underneath it so it all fits your head." The show forced her to confront various personal fears beyond performing and singing.

Although Sully is open to pushing her boundaries and venturing outside her comfort zone, she has firmly declined offers to appear on Ten's I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here, citing her severe claustrophobia and fear of snakes as insurmountable obstacles.

She is grateful for choosing The Masked Singer as her reality show adventure, where she had the opportunity to have fun despite the challenges.

Images: Network Ten

Sandra Bullock mourns the passing of her longtime partner after private illness

Hollywood star Sandra Bullock's beloved partner, Bryan Randall, has passed away at the age of 57, with the heart-wrenching news confirmed by his grieving family in a statement shared on Monday.

“It is with great sadness that we share that on Aug. 5, Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a three-year battle with ALS,” the statement read.

“Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private and those of us who cared for him did our best to honour his request. We are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors who navigated the landscape of this illness with us and to the astounding nurses who became our roommates, often sacrificing their own families to be with ours. At this time we ask for privacy to grieve and to come to terms with the impossibility of saying goodbye to Bryan.”

The statement was signed with a poignant, "His Loving Family".

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a merciless neurological affliction that ravages motor neurons that command delicate voluntary muscle movement. Regrettably, there is currently no remedy for the condition.

Bullock, aged 59, crossed paths with model-turned-photographer Randall when he was summoned to capture her son Louis’ birthday celebration in the early days of 2015. Their connection was immediate and profound.

The mother-of-two, and an actress who has fiercely guarded her privacy over the years, chose to unveil fragments of her relationship's intimacy during a candid appearance on Red Table Talk in 2021.

“I found the love of my life. We share two beautiful children — three children, [Randall’s] older daughter. It’s the best thing ever,” Bullock said at the time.

“I don’t wanna say do it like I do it, but I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother … I don’t need to be told to be ever present in the hardest of times. I don’t need to be told to weather a storm with a good man.”

She added that Randall was also a superb “example” to her two children: “He’s the example that I would want my children to have... I have a partner who’s very Christian and there are two different ways of looking at things. I don’t always agree with him, and he doesn’t always agree with me. But he is an example even when I don’t agree with him... I’m stubborn but sometimes I need to sit back and listen and go, ‘You’re saying it differently but we mean exactly the same thing.’

“It’s hard to co-parent because I just want to do it myself.”

"He was so happy, but he was scared. I'm a bulldozer. My life was already on the track, and here's this beautiful human being who doesn't want anything to do with my life but the right human being to be there."

Images: Getty

“I could barely finish”: Sandra Sully’s most embarrassing on-air moment

Television isn’t always all glitz and glamour, and as Sandra Sully knows, it can come with its fair share of embarrassment too.

Over the course of her decades in the industry, she’s braved no few memorable moments - the good and the bad - and during an appearance on the I’ve Got News For You podcast, she opened up about the most embarrassing of them all.

It was in 2007 that the sports team at Ten decided to run some footage from the day - without letting Sully in on their shenanigans - of when play was halted at the Australian PGA Tour by a kangaroo who had made its way onto the course, and decided to play with its own testicles in front of South Africa’s top golfer Rory Sabbatini.

“I would throw to sport and they always had a ‘play of the day’ and I generally got a chance to look at it,” Sully explained to I’ve Got News For You host Andrew Bucklow, “and for whatever reason, I was busy and they deliberately didn’t let me see it – they didn’t put it in the rundown.”

“It was international coverage, with the kangaroo, and the team at Sports Tonight put music to it with bells, ‘ding dong, ding dong’,” she added, “and I wasn’t expecting it.

“I could barely finish the bulletin.”

After airing the footage from the tour during their on-air segment, Sully and sports presenter Brad McEwan could be seen laughing at their desk, with Sully wheezing that she “can’t go on.”

As Sully tried to bring things back around to a more sensible footing, McEwan cracked a joke about it all, sending the pair into another round of giggles, before Sully steered them straight into the weather report - though it wasn’t all smooth sailing from there, with the newsreader barely able to get her words out through her own amusement, despite one “I don’t think I’ll forgive you” making it through.

Sully went on to explain things like that had happened “so many times” throughout her career, and that to go on in her industry, she really had “to have a sense of humour”.

And while humour is important to Sully, she admitted to Bucklow that nerves also factor in before each and every show, despite having so many years of experience under her belt.

“It’s not extreme nerves,” she said, “but there’s always a moment with about 10 seconds to go that, you know, there’s a mental register.

“You’re on a tightrope, and anything can go wrong. It’s live television.”

Images: Getty

"Pull ya head in": Lisa Wilkinson’s colleagues lash out

Lisa Wilkinson’s colleagues have turned on her in the wake of the Brittany Higgins trial being delayed.

The Project host caused serious legal issues for the alleged rape case against the former Liberal Staffer following her Logies speech.

Chief Justice Lucy McCallum announced the case, which was due to begin next week, has been delayed due to Wilkinson’s speech.

And now, Wilkinson’s Channel 10 colleagues have turned on her and the result has been nothing but nasty.

Beloved weatherman Tim Bailey called out Wilkinson in a now deleted tweet telling her to “pull ya head in”.

“Hey Lisa, pull ya head in. I know this might be difficult, because it is a very big head. But please try. #LisaWilkinson #Logies2022 #carparkthief,” the tweet read.

Veteran newsreader Sandra Sully has also liked a tweet by celebrity reporter Peter Ford, who heavily criticised Wilkinson’s speech.

His tweet had an image of The Daily Telegraph’s Wednesday front page showing Wilkinson with her hand up and the headline: “Hand up if you’ve caused court chaos”.

Ford also tweeted: “Such serious consequences from @Lisa_Wilkinson Logies speech. If only she’d stuck to silly stories like the paparazzi who stalked her in Chapel Street. Hope she now backs away now and lets people seek justice they (both parties) deserve.”

Sunrise presenter Natalie Barr also briefly mentioned the incident on the breakfast TV show on Wednesday questioning why the speech wasn’t checked by lawyers.

“You know, we have our own lawyers, we often consult them before we put a story to air, would this have been the case where Channel 10's lawyers should have stepped in and lawyered this speech?”

Ironically, Wilkinson called for discretion to be used when writing/reporting on the case.

“Naming the man on social media & passing judgement could have dire consequences for the outcome of any trial,” she tweeted last year.

There is a high possibility that Wilkinson’s speech could be investigated and she may face legal consequences according to President of the Australian Bar Association Matthew Collin.

Bruce Lehrmann is accused of sexually assaulting Higgins in 2019 and was due to stand trial in the ACT Supreme Court next week.

He has pleaded not guilty over the alleged rape.

Lehrmann’s team then requested a temporary stay of court proceedings due to the publicity surrounding the case from the speech.

Images: Instagram

I don’t know when. Probably when they’re teenagers, solidly 16- or 17-year-olds.”

Bullock has two adopted children, her eldest son Louis, 12, who was adopted at three months, and her daughter Laila, 10, who was adopted at the age of three.

The actress has previously spoken on the talk show Red Table Talk about the challenges of being a parent and how she almost gave up during the adoption process.

"When I first went through the process myself, you have to prove that you are a capable parent and you’re in the judgment cage. I got halfway through it and I said, 'I can’t do this.' It was an out-of-body experience,” she said.

Bullock also addressed skin colour with her kids, admitting that she wished there was no stigma with the topic.

"To say that I wish our skins matched, sometimes I do," she said.

"Because then it would be easier on how people approach us. And I have the same feelings as a woman with brown skin being her babies or a white woman with white babies."

Image: Instagram

Revealed: Behind-the-scenes footage of Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks on set of Sully

Clint Eastwood’s new movie, Sully, brings to life the untold story of one of the most historical events in aviation history. Watch the two screen veterans on set of the movie that is to be released next week. The clip above includes teasers from the movie and a some on-set action.

Starring Tom Hanks, the heart-pounding drama recounts the events of what is known as “the miracle on the Hudson”. On January 15, 2009, Captain “Sully” Sullenberger did the impossible. After assumed double engine failure, he successfully glided his aircraft onto the frosty surface of the Hudson river, saving the lives of all 155 souls on board.

The heroic tale did not end there though. Even as Sully was praised by the public and the media for his incredible skills, an investigation unfolded that questioned if the risky landing was necessary at all, and threated the pilot’s entire career.

Recalling his experience working with the legendary Eastwood, Tom Hanks said, “I don’t think anyone but Clint could make this movie. He’s a master film maker”.

When the director was asked about the process of casting, he proudly responded, “Tom was one of the first people we thought about”.

We think this one looks like a real winner.
