"Unimaginable curse": Karl Stefanovic pays tribute to fallen father

Karl Stefanovic has paid tribute to Lachlan Webb, a young Queensland dad who sadly passed away from a rare genetic brain disorder.

Webb first started showing symptoms of Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) early last year, a rare degenerative brain disorder where the inability to fall asleep is just one of the many symptoms of the condition which many describe to be a living nightmare.

From there the symptoms progress to the inability to walk, loss of sight and speech and eventual total shutdown of the body's ability to keep itself alive among others.

The Queensland father had already lost his grandmother, aunties, uncles and his mum Narelle to the disease, with his mum passing away just six months after she was diagnosed.

The condition is so rare that only 50 families worldwide are known to carry the gene.

Karl Stefanovic first met Webb and his sister Hayley back in 2016, after they both learned that they carried the fatal gene. Despite the diagnosis the siblings were determined to ensure the "curse" ended with them, travelling to the US to participate in a clinical study.

The siblings also both underwent IVF with their respective partners to ensure that their children won't carry the gene.

"Lachlan was a remarkable man battling an unimaginable curse," Karl said on the Today show.

"Everyone at Today is thinking of the Webb family, Hayley, Lachlan's beautiful wife Claire and his little boy Morrison."

"Hayley also has that gene, their bravery and resilience was incredible to witness firsthand and it's such an important message - everyday is a gift and our thoughts, our prayers and our love are with you all this morning."

Images: Nine

Babyfaced Sam Armytage unrecognisable in resurfaced clip

Aussie TV presenter Sam Armytage appears unrecognisable in a resurfaced clip.

A video has emerged of a baby-faced Armytage early on in her media career, presenting for news for WIN in Canberra in the '90s.

Armytage appeared on the Today show on Monday morning to discuss the launch of Nine's new reality series The Golden Bachelor, which she will host.

It didn't take long before Today host Karl Stefanovic teased her with a throwback video.

“You were part of the Nine family going way back to the early ’60s, have a look at this,” Stefanovic joked.

Today co-host Sarah Abo and Armytage laughed as footage of a younger Armytage appeared onscreen wearing a white blazer and rocking a bob cut.

Abo told Armytage “you haven’t changed at all!”

“Oh darling, thank you. Listen to that little high-pitched voice — I was a baby,” Armytage replied.

Armytage's new stint comes just months after she left the Seven Network, where she was previously the host for another reality TV show, Farmer Wants A Wife.

The show will air in 2025, with Armytage explaining that it is a similar show to The Bachelor that Aussies love but with a focus on those in their 50s and 60s.

“This is bringing it forward to the golden ages, as we like to call it. We’re all heading towards some of this faster than others,” Armytage joked before announcing that they're currently casting.

“What we’re looking for here is a Golden Bachelor, most likely in his 60s, and some ladies who will be in their 50s or 60s … because we’re casting now.

“This is for people who are looking for love again, so people who’ve got some miles on their tyres who are ready to fall in love again.”

She said there would be some “great stories” along with some “kind of sad” ones; however, the aim is for a “happy fairytale ending”.

Stefanovic then joked that it was a shame Richard Wilkins was “off the market” before adding he was shocked people over the age of 50 were “so active”.

“It’s shocking. I just feel like it’s like a lot to look at on the TV,” Stefanovic said, admitting that he'd watched the US version of the show that debuted last year.

“I just find some of it confronting in a physical way.”

Abo and Armytage were quick to cut off Stefanovic's train of thought before it went down “a path perhaps that we don’t want it to go down”.

“I know what you’re talking about, but I don’t think it’s confronting. I think it’s lovely,” Armytage said.

“I think that it’s life. It is. And there’s a huge percentage of the population in this age bracket who are active and looking for love.”

Images: Today

Today reporter walloped by Melbourne Cup horse

A hilarious on-air moment has been captured by the Today Show, as a reporter was shoved by a winning race horse.

Christine Ahern was reporting live from Flemington on Monday to celebrate the launch of the 2024 Melbourne Cup Carnival, as she got up close and personal with Twilight Payment, who won the Cup in 2020.

Perhaps not used to all the attention - given the 2020 Cup had no trackside crowd due to the pandemic - as the horse made his TV debut on Today, things quickly went awry.

"Can I say I'm normally quite nervous around horses, but Twilight Payment is absolutely beautiful and as you can see, quite a calm horse as well," Christine started as she cautiously petted the large animal.

Twilight Payment patiently munched on some carrot as Christine spoke with Today host Karl and Sarah back in the studio, but when the horse's snacks ran out, he got a little fidgety.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; "Most loathed woman in parliament": Karl Stefanovic grills Lidia Thorpe

Karl Stefanovic has labelled Lidia Thorpe as “the most loathed woman in parliament” during a fiery interview on the Today show.

The Today host interviewed the politician on Thursday morning, noting that her decision to heckle King Charles was not winning her much support.

“Lidia, good morning to you. Nice to see you. I think it’s fair to say you might very well be the most loathed woman in parliament in Canberra at the moment. And that’s really saying something,’’ Stefanovic said.

However, the Senator had no regrets and said that she was used to being "the black sheep" of politics.

“Oh, well, it’s just another day in the colony, Karl. I’m used to that treatment,” she said.

“You know. I am the black sheep of the family, if you like. But I wanted to send a message to the King. I got that message across. The whole world is talking about it.

“And my people are happy because my people have been protesting for decades and decades. As you all know, for exactly this. And so the message has been sent, delivered. Now it’s up to the King of England to respond.”

Stefanovic then asked her: “The question this morning you were being asked is, why the hell doesn’t Lidia Thorpe just do everyone a favour and get out of Canberra? Will you?”

To which she replied: “I’m about truth telling. I’m loud, proud, black. Get used to it and listen to what I have to say.

“We need to grow up as a nation and get rid of him and have our own head of state.”

The broadcaster then showed a video of her swearing allegiance to the late Queen Elizabeth.

“Did that hurt a little when you swore your allegiance? Did it take a little bit of your soul?’’ Stefanovic asked.

“Absolutely it did. And I had to go through a process with my family prior to doing that, because swearing allegiance to someone else from another country whose ancestors have done a lot of damage to my ancestors, I think is completely inappropriate,” she replied.

This comes after Thorpe's pledge to Queen Elizabeth's "hairs" instead of "heir" came to light.

“We don’t need to be paying the Governor-General $800,000 a year to sign a piece of legislation. And we paid for that man to come here. How many millions of dollars did that cost?” she continued.

Karl hit back saying that Thorpe herself is “getting paid pretty well to be part of the process and to be part of parliament, a place you clearly despise.”

She replied: “Yeah. I’m being paid to do my job. You could say it’s paying the rent if you like."

“This government has walked back a treaty. I know the opposition is not interested in treaty. So where else do you go? You go to the King of England. Who? Whose ancestors treated with other countries but didn’t treaty here. So there’s unfinished business. I’ll spend the next three years getting that unfinished business done.”

Images: Nine

Former Today Show host's surprise return

It's been almost two months since Brooke Boney wrapped up her final Today Show, and bid farewell to viewers after five years on the show to further her studies at Oxford University in the UK.

The former news and entertainment presenter made a surprise return to the Today show on Thursday morning, sharing updates on her latest adventure to hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo.

Since settling in London, she was a guest at a reception held by none other than King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The royals hosted a luncheon for Commonwealth countries at St James Palace, and the event was attended by other high-profile Aussies such as Cate Blanchett and Kathy Lette.

"It was so wonderful, you go there and the whole experience is pretty surreal," the proud Gamilaroi Gomeroi woman told the Today hosts.

"And I think especially as an Aboriginal person, it's like, oh how do I engage with this?' Surcharges are added to most purchases, but what are the rules behind these extra fees?

Steve Worthington, Swinburne University of Technology

You head to the register at the cafe to pay for your lunch, swipe your card and suddenly realise you’ve been hit with an extra small but unexpected charge.

It might be listed on your receipt as a service or merchant fee, but either way it’s because you’ve used a credit or debit card.

With the pandemic accelerating the use of cards instead of cash – only 13% of Australians use cash, dropping from 27% in the last five years – these extra charges have become mainstream.

However, as was highlighted by National Australia Bank chief executive Andrew Irvine during a parliamentary inquiry into bank charges last week, they are often applied, in varying amounts, by businesses for reasons not always in line with their original purpose.

Irvine slammed as “outrageous” a 10% surcharge he was forced to pay when he recently bought a cup of coffee at a Sydney cafe. “I don’t like the lack of transparency and lack of consistency,” he said.

But most Australians are making these extra payments every day, without question. So how did this end up happening – and what can you do about it?

Card surcharges in Australia

At the start of this century, payments for goods and services were mainly made by cash, paper cheques, credit and debit cards.

The first two of these options would eventually be deposited into a bank account by the merchant who ran the business. The latter two would be processed by the bank or financial institution which would charge the business a merchant service fee.

For debit cards this might be a fixed fee. But for credit cards it would be proportionate with the value of the goods or services.

The Reserve Bank of Australia became concerned the use of credit cards was greater than that of debit cards and introduced surcharging in January 2003. The intention was to lower the cost to the merchant of accepting debit cards and change customer behaviour.

This has been achieved, as both the volume and value of paying by debit cards now exceeds the volume and value of paying by credit cards.

However, the reality in 2024 is that card surcharges have become commonplace, and in a wide variety of payment situations.

It’s estimated to cost us billions

It is difficult to calculate the total cost of surcharging to Australian consumers since they became legal more than 20 years ago, because the rates charged vary widely.

But at last week’s inquiry, Labor MP Jerome Laxale suggested it added up to A$4 billion in the last year.

Surcharges can be imposed by small to medium enterprises such as your local cafe, doctor’s surgery, your energy supplier, or when you use a card to pay your council rates.

As an example, my rates are payable by card, with a surcharge of 1.10% for Mastercard and Visa credit, and 0.55% for eftpos and Mastercard and Visa debit cards.

When surcharges can be applied

Many merchants charge the same rate for all their card payments and some fail to alert customers to the extra fee before accepting the payment at their terminal, which they are required to do.

Indeed, even on a receipt for payment, the surcharge can be described by the merchant as a “handling” or “merchant” fee.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) regulates surcharging and demands the merchant prove a surcharge is justified.

Furthermore, the ACCC says if there is no way for a consumer to pay without paying a surcharge – that is, they can’t pay by cash or cheque – then the business must include the surcharge in the displayed price.

Penalties for misuse

The ACCC can take merchants to court to enforce these regulations and there have been some examples of this in recent history.

In July 2021, Nine Entertainment paid penalties totalling $159,840, plus $450,000 redressing customers, for charging subscribers and advertisers excessive surcharges.

The ACCC specifies that the surcharge must not be more than it costs the merchant to use that payment type.

As guidance to the merchants, it also offers the average costs for different payment types: eftpos less than 0.5%, Mastercard and Visa Debit 0.5%–1% and Mastercard and Visa credit 1%–1.5%.

However, despite the ACCC setting guidelines for the amounts that can be charged, many surcharges are above this guidance and in some cases more than 2.0% for all cards.

Some merchants do charge different surcharging rates, depending on the cards they accept, be it eftpos, Mastercard or Visa. In theory, the surcharge rate is meant to be determined by the merchant service fee, which is negotiated between the merchant and their bank.

Larger merchants, such as the supermarkets, department stores and energy companies, can negotiate low rates (reportedly as low as one cent a transaction). But smaller merchants with less negotiating clout will have higher service fees.

The arrival of new payment players, such as Square and Stripe, has offered businesses an alternative banker of card payments, which can then use surcharging as part of their merchant service fees.

Surcharging overseas

The European Union already has a long-standing ban on surcharging, while in the United States, surcharging is illegal in some states.

Other countries, including the United Kingdom, have tried surcharging on card payments, only to abandon them as it was rorted by some merchants and became an unnecessary expense for consumers.

A statement released by the UK Treasury when it banned the practice in 2018 described surcharges as

Hidden charges for paying with a debit or credit card, which will help millions of UK consumers to avoid rip-off fees when spending their hard earned money.

What can you do about it?

Before surcharging was allowed by the Reserve Bank in January 2003, acceptance by merchants of payments was just another cost of doing business. And it seems many consumers have just accepted surcharges as part of their transactions.

There are ways to avoid them, the most obvious being to use cash. Using eftpos involves charges, but they are less than those imposed on credit and debit cards.

The Reserve Bank is working on implementing a so-called “least-cost routing” system that defaults to the lowest cost network when processing payments. Unfortunately, this is yet to be widely adopted by businesses.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Quirky grandfather shocks Today hosts with unusual funeral plans

Michael 'Skip' Field has decided he doesn't want his family crying for him at an ordinary funeral when he dies.

Instead, the quirky Queensland grandfather wants a celebration for his final send off and wants his family to remember him in a very unique way.

Skip shared his funeral plans with Today hosts Sarah and Alex, who were perplexed by Skip's plans for his final send-off.

"I've been to a lot of funerals over the years, I'm an old fart and I never enjoyed any of them," Skip said.

"So come the time I turn toes up, they're going to cart me off to the crematorium for a big barbecue, where I'll be the guest of honour, then when the heat dies down, they're going to put me in a little shoe box and give my young son a ring," he said.

"He'll come and pick me up and I'm an avid cowboy shooter, we load our own ammunition and one of the things that happens to cowboys when they pass on is they have a cowboy salute where you get a big, long line and everybody fires a shotgun, bang, bang, bang, bang, and have a salute."

"Well, I'm going to get my ashes mixed into the shotgun shells and donate the shotgun shells to the range and they can shoot me off down the range."

"Plus all the smoke that comes out at the end of the barrel is a bit blue, but being a Queenslander, I've got a bit of maroon chalk that's going to go in with the ashes, so when they come out at the end of the barrel it's going to be a maroon tinge on it," he said.

Today hosts Sarah and Alex were gob-smacked by the idea of Skip donating his ash-filled bullets to the local firing range, but that's not all he has planned.

"The other thing is a friend of mine's got a cannon and we're going to shoot part of the ashes out of the cannon at Pleasant Range near Dalby," he said.

"Then the kids don't need a big, morbid ceremony, so they're going to have a party here at my house and I bought this thing called the 'loved one launcher' that is like a giant party popper, you put your ashes in and it'll shoot you 75 yards into the air with confetti and streamers and all that - Yeehaw! It's going to be great."

Skip said the whole process cost less than getting a casket for the ground and it would be the last big thing he gets a say in.

Channel Nine revamps Today show line up

Big changes are coming to Channel Nine's flagship Today show, following the departure of popular newsreader Brooke Boney.

The shake-up to the morning show's line-up was confirmed on Monday and will affect both the weekday and weekend programs.

Jayne Azzopardi, a former Sydney news reporter, will replace Boney on the morning news desk.

Azzopardi's role as co-host of Weekend Today will now be taken over by Sophie Walsh, who will co-host alongside fellow veteran Nine presenter Clint Stanaway.

Walsh has worked at Channel Nine for 15 years, after first joining the broadcaster as a news reporter in 2009.

In another change for Weekend Today, senior journalist Lizzie Pearl will cover the news while Dan Anstey will present the weather.

Renee Bargh, who has regularly featured on the Today show in the past has been officially welcomed to the team as an entertainment reporter.

Confirmation of the changes comes after an emotional week among staff at the Today show with Boney's departure last Friday.

"Thank you for accepting me. I know that I don't fit the mould and I'm grateful for each and every one of you for tuning in every day," Boney said during her farewell.

The journalist, who was joined by her mother on the couch, became emotional as she reflected on her experience.

"I'm so grateful for every opportunity that I've been given here, I've done things I never dreamed possible," Boney said.

"For someone like me, I grew up in housing commission, so this is really beyond my wildest dreams.

"I mean, I just spent a month at the Olympics. I've been to the Oscars... all around the world to do things that most people don't get to do."

During her final show last week Today host Karl Stefanovic also told her that she was well loved and respected.

“We love you and everything you represent, how hard you work,” he said.

Boney announced her departure earlier this year after she was offered a position to study at Oxford University.

Image: Nine/ Instagram

Today show star's teary farewell

Brooke Boney has wrapped up her final Today Show before she embarks on a new adventure overseas.

The proud Gamilaroi Gomeroi woman, who has read the news on the Channel Nine morning show for five years, was surrounded by her colleagues as they reflected on her time with the program.

"I just spent a month at the Olympics. 6 extra items to pack when travelling by yourself

Travelling alone can be a life changing experience, but it also requires a few extra precautions. Pack these six things to keep yourself safe.

1. Doorstop

A simple wedge of wood or plastic can give you priceless peace of mind in a hotel room. Even if you lock the door, people might be able to break the lock or use a cloned key. A doorstop quickly and easily wedges it shut so you can sleep easy. If you want to go one step further, you can get special doorstop alarms that will emit a loud siren if anyone tries to force the door.

2. Extra lock

There are endless uses for an extra padlock or bike lock-style cable. You can double up on your hotel door, secure your train carriage or ship cabin, double lock your suitcase or chain it to something sturdy. Compact, sturdy locks are relatively cheap and easy to carry with you, and will deter most thieves or intruders looking for an easy mark.

3. First aid kit

If you don’t have a travel buddy to send down to the chemist, a simple first aid kit can be a lifesaver. Keep it stocked with band aids, basic bandages, pain killers, antibiotics, antihistamines and gastro meds, along with anything else you think will be useful. If you are really unwell, you’ll obviously need to see a doctor, but having the first line of defence within easy reach is always smart.

4. Whistle or personal alarm

If you will be walking through unfamiliar cities at night (or even in the day), a whistle or personal alarm can give you a feeling of security. If anyone unsavoury approaches you, a loud noise will startle them and generally scare them off. It also draws the attention of other people and makes them aware of your predicament.

5. Small torch

Never underestimate the power of a little light to make you feel safe. It’s great for finding your way through dark streets, looking for your keys in your bag or seeing the lock on your hotel door. You can get small lights that attach to a keychain or wallet and give out a surprisingly bright light. People are less likely to approach you if they feel they will be seen.

6. Fake wedding ring

This one is for the ladies – in some countries an unmarried woman is seen as an easy target. Buying a cheap, fake wedding ring can give you a simple cover. Men may be less likely to approach you and, if they do, you can simply say your husband is in the next shop or waiting for you back at the hotel.

Cafe targeted online for charging customer a "heating fee"

A cafe in Melbourne has copped a wave of backlash online after allegedly charging a customer to heat up his muffin for breakfast.

The disgruntled diner took to Facebook to complain about the extra fee on his $7 muffin at the cafe and claimed the first he knew of it was when he saw it on his receipt.

His post went viral with hundreds of people slamming café etiquette and urging him to go to the ACCC.

"A f***ing dollar to heat my muffin? It's cr*p like this that just makes you shake your head and question where it is all going," the customer wrote in his original post.

The cafe has since hit back at the post, and the angry customer who wrote it, saying the extra charge had been an error despite Heat Standard $1.00 being written on the receipt.

They also said the customer could have simply solved the issue in person rather than blasting them online.

"We do not nor have we ever charged for any heating of our wonderful baked treats," the café spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.

"Unfortunately this has become a mountain of an issue that could have easily been resolved without a lynch mob caused by negligence at the hands of an influential keyboard warrior who ironically sells the idea of spiritual life practices and being grounded yet flipped out over a muffin."

The original post racked up more than 870 comments before it was deleted, and more than 1,000 reactions.

Some of those who saw it went on to slam the cafe by sending them threatening messages, commenting on posts on Instagram and calling their business phone to hurl abuse.

"It's a sad world when a local cafe that aims for nothing more then customer satisfaction and community values to be upheld gets threatening messages from rogue vigilantes about wanting to see us go out of business over a muffin being prepared and served to quality standards," the cafe owners said.

The cafe responded to the growing backlash online by announcing their muffins would be free on Tuesday.

Today show star and veteran doctor dies at age 69

A veteran doctor and regular guest on the Today show Dr Ric Gordon has passed away at the age of 69 from pancreatic cancer.

Known for sharing his expertise as an obstetrician and fertility specialist, Dr Gordon became a household name after he delivered the first baby on Australian television.

Upon hearing of his death, veteran radio host and beloved Australian author Wendy Harmer revealed Dr Gordon delivered both her babies even after she and her partner dropped out of IVF.

In a post on X, she wrote, “He was a pioneer in IVF in Australia and gave hope to so many... and was kind and caring professional. Vale.”

Nine News confirmed the “sad news” of Dr Gordon’s passing from pancreatic cancer on Saturday, as presenter Georgie Gardner said “he will be deeply missed”.

Professionally known as Dr Ric Porter, he had previously hosted Nine’s long-running lifestyle hit Good Medicine, which ran for nine years in the 1990s.

Dr Gordon was a part of the team of doctors who delivered the first IVF birth in NSW in 1983, and during his career, he delivered more than 5000 babies, including in 2003 when he safely delivered a baby live on the Today show.

Reflecting on the moment in 2022, Dr Gordon told Today viewers it was an extraordinary moment in television.

“It went so well, it was a great morning and a good outcome,” he said. “The baby cried when it was meant to cry, mum and dad were happy."

The well-known doctor also drew some controversy over his career, including an offensive analogy where he used the Holocaust to explain weight loss on the same breakfast TV program in 2015.

Despite apologising for saying “there were no overweight people in the concentration camps”, his apology was dismissed by many for being “insufficient” and “unsatisfactory”.

Dr Gordon said at the time, “I’m very sorry it upset those people. It was never my intention.”

He added that he had “done a lot of study” on the Holocaust and his comments were merely “used as a medical example”.
