A statement released on Thursday confirmed the news, adding that “Henri retained his sense of wonder and joie de vivre until the end”.

Szeps revealed his diagnosis in 2021 and had been living in a care facility since last year.

Born in a Swiss refugee camp in 1943 to Polish Holocaust survivors, Szeps arrived in Australia as an eight-year-old and went on to become a pillar of the nation’s stage and screen. His career spanned decades, marked by memorable roles not only in television but also in theatre, including turns as Gandalf in The Hobbit and Sigmund Freud in a celebrated stage production.

He received an Order of Australia Medal in 2001 in recognition of his contributions to the performing arts, the culmination of a career full of accolades.

Alongside Ruth Cracknell and Garry McDonald, Szeps made Mother and Son a household staple during its original 10-year run, which ended in 1994. Star of The Cosby Show dies aged 54

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor who became a household name playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died at age 54 in an accidental drowning in Costa Rica.

Warner drowned on Sunday afternoon while swimming at Playa Cocles, a beach on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, according to the country’s Judicial Investigation Department. Authorities said he was caught in a current and pulled out to sea. Though beachgoers managed to bring him to shore, Costa Rica’s Red Cross responders found him unresponsive. He was later taken to the local morgue.

Warner’s death marks the tragic end of a career that spanned four decades and helped shape American television in the 1980s and beyond. Cast at age 13 after a wide talent search, Warner’s portrayal of Theo – the only son in the Huxtable household – earned him an Emmy nomination in 1986 and made him a relatable and iconic figure for a generation of viewers.

Among the show’s most memorable moments was Theo’s heartfelt debate with his father about responsibility in the pilot episode, and his comic misadventures with a homemade designer shirt gifted by his sister Denise, a scene many fans still recall with fondness.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tracee Ellis Ross (@traceeellisross)

Born on August 18, 1970, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Warner was named after Malcolm X and jazz legend Ahmad Jamal. He was raised by his mother, Pamela, who became his manager and guided his early interest in the arts. He later attended The Professional Children's School in New York to pursue acting seriously.

Though forever linked to his role on The Cosby Show, Warner successfully carved out a diverse career in the decades that followed. He starred in Malcolm & Eddie, the BET sitcom Read Between the Lines, played a popular returning character in Community, and more recently appeared in acclaimed dramas such as American Crime Story and The Resident. He also earned a Grammy Award for best traditional R&B performance and received a spoken word nomination for his poetry album Hiding in Plain View.

In a 2015 interview with the Associated Press, Warner expressed both pride in the cultural significance of The Cosby Show and sadness over its legacy being overshadowed by the sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby.

"My biggest concern is when it comes to images of people of colour on television and film," Warner said. "We've always had The Cosby Show to hold up against that. And the fact that we no longer have that, that's the thing that saddens me the most – because in a few generations the Huxtables will have been just a fairytale."

He also shared his deep commitment to his craft and his drive to evolve as an artist: “I grew up with a maniacal obsession with not wanting to be one of those 'where are they now kids.’ I feel very blessed… to be where I am now and finally at a place where I can let go of that worry about having a life after Cosby.”

Warner was married and had a daughter, though he kept their identities private. His representatives and those of Bill Cosby declined to comment following news of his death.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner leaves behind a legacy of groundbreaking work, creative versatility, and a deeply personal connection with millions of viewers who watched him grow up on screen.

Images: NBC / Supplied

Veteran Aussie soap star diagnosed with cancer

Beloved Australian-born actor Tristan Rogers has been diagnosed with cancer, just eight months after making his final appearance on General Hospital, the soap that made him a household name.

The 79-year-old is currently undergoing treatment in hospital, with his family and medical team by his side. The sad news was confirmed by his longtime representative Anthony Turk, who said the actor is "working closely with his medical team on a treatment plan" and that this is “a challenging time for Tristan and his family”.

"As they face both the emotional and physical burdens that come with this diagnosis, the family kindly asks for privacy and understanding," Turk said in a statement. “They are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support and love from their friends and family.”

Rogers, who played the charming and quick-witted Robert Scorpio on General Hospital for over four decades, has expressed gratitude to his loyal fan base.

“Tristan sends his love to his fans and wants them to know how much he appreciates their loyalty and encouragement over the years,” the statement read. “This support means more to him now than ever.”

Rogers first stepped into the role of Scorpio in 1980, becoming a mainstay of the daytime drama for 17 years before his character was written off – only to return, soap-style, from the dead in 2006. His final scenes aired on November 12, 2024, during the show’s 62nd season, when Scorpio departed Port Charles with his ex-wife, Holly Sutton.

Throughout his storied career, Rogers also featured in The Bay, Studio City, The Young and the Restless, and The Love Boat. His performance in Studio City earned him a Daytime Emmy Award in 2020, a career high point he later called “numbing” and “exciting”.

Born in Melbourne, Rogers got his start in Australian TV staples like Bellbird, Number 96, The Box and Division 4, before relocating to the United States, where he found international fame.

He has been married to Teresa Parkerson since 1995, and the couple share two children: daughter Sara Jane, 32, and son Cale, 28.

Images: Instagram

"Enough is enough": MasterChef star opens up on career scandals

Celebrity chef and former MasterChef Australia judge George Calombaris has revealed the full extent of the personal and professional toll a series of scandals took on his life, including a $3 million hit to his business and a private struggle with alcohol addiction.

In a candid interview on the Ouzo Talk podcast, the once high-flying restaurateur said the fallout from multiple controversies and the pandemic left him at rock bottom.

“After Covid hit, I’m suddenly sitting in Melbourne, which is shut for now two years, sitting with my pyjamas on … looking at my phone going there’s no emails, there’s nothing to do (and I) start drinking daily,” Calombaris said.

“I’ll never forget three months down the track I lost it one night. I got in my car, drove down the road, I don’t know where [I was]. My brother found me pissed as a fart.

“And that was a moment, he really slapped it out of me and went enough is enough.”

Calombaris rose to fame as a judge on MasterChef Australia in 2009, quickly becoming a fan favourite and building a multimillion-dollar hospitality empire. But by 2017, his reputation began to unravel after a string of public scandals.

That year, he was caught on camera shoving a 19-year-old football fan at the A-League grand final. The incident led to an assault charge, which was eventually overturned in 2018 on appeal. Calombaris was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond and the conviction was struck from his record.

“It was six months of pain you know, I had to go in and out of court three times, hire one of the best KC’s of the time,” he said. “I reckon it cost around 3 million bucks that, in loss of endorsements … Ridiculous, stupid, I would have rather taken that $3 million and given it to charity.”

In 2019, Calombaris and his hospitality group, Made Establishment, admitted to underpaying roughly 500 current and former staff members $7.8 million over six years. The revelation sent shockwaves through the industry and the public.

“We love in Australia [to] never let the truth get in the way of a good story,” Calombaris said. “The truth of the matter is that we overpaid and underpaid 51 per cent of our crew and 49 per cent of them, we had 550 team members and we found the problem.”

“We went to Fair Work, we owned up and we paid.”

The company repaid staff wages and superannuation and was fined a $200,000 “contrition payment” by the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Later that year, Calombaris and fellow judges Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan left MasterChef after a breakdown in contract negotiations. Then came the pandemic.

Alone, unemployed, and with Melbourne in lockdown, Calombaris spiralled, until a wake-up call from his brother forced him to confront his drinking and begin to rebuild his life.

His story now serves as a sobering look at the cost of fame, failure and, ultimately, recovery.

Images: Instagram

Hollywood star sings to her mother in hospital during cancer battle

Kate Beckinsale has shared an emotional video of herself singing to her mother, Judy Loe, as the 77-year-old remains in hospital while bravely battling stage four cancer.

The tender moment, posted to Instagram, shows the Underworld actress gently serenading her mum with the Everly Brothers’ 1958 song Bye, Bye Love, revealing the choice had a deeply personal meaning. “When my mum was 14, she was in a harmony group with her best friends Mary, Sylvia (known as Fuzzy to this day because of an unfortunate perm decades ago), and Chris,” Beckinsale wrote. “I am a very poor substitute not being a very good singer but I want my mum’s dearest and oldest friends in her hospital room with her.”

Beckinsale, 51, thanked her mother’s friends and signed off the post with love and humour, saying, “Love you all but most especially my mum. X and apologise to anybody in the hospital subject to my dreadful singing 🤍.”

While the cause of Loe’s current hospital stay is unclear, the actress and her mother have been enduring wave after wave of heartbreak. Earlier this year, the family lost Roy Battersby, Loe’s husband and Beckinsale’s stepfather, who passed away at 87. He was a renowned British television director and a guiding presence in their lives.

In a previous post, Beckinsale opened up about the compounding grief that’s taken a severe toll on her health. “I watched my stepfather die quite shockingly, my mother has stage 4 cancer, and I lost a lot of weight from stress and grief, quite quickly,” she wrote.

She went on to reveal that the emotional strain had physical consequences. “I was in hospital for six weeks because the grief had burned a hole in my oesophagus which made me vomit copious amounts of blood, and I found eating very hard.”

Support has poured in for Beckinsale online, with many followers sending kind messages. One wrote: “Bless you, darling Kate. I wish we could hold our mums’ hands and hearts forever and ever.”

As she continues to care for her mother through unimaginable pain, Beckinsale’s heartfelt video stands as a raw and powerful reminder of the depth of love and the quiet ways we try to ease each other’s suffering.

Images: Instagram

"Devastated": Football star dies at 28, just days after wedding

Liverpool and Portugal football star Diogo Jota has died in a tragic car crash in Spain, just days after celebrating his wedding to long-time partner Rute Cardoso.

The 28-year-old forward was killed alongside his younger brother, 26-year-old Andre Silva, in the early hours of Thursday morning near Zamora in north-western Spain. Authorities confirmed the pair died at the scene after their Lamborghini suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking, veered off the road, and burst into flames.

The heartbreaking accident comes less than two weeks after Jota married Rute in Portugal on June 22. The couple, who shared three children, had posted a joyful photo from their wedding day with the caption: “Yes to forever.”

Now, that forever has been cruelly cut short.

Jota had only recently capped off one of the most successful periods of his career. In May, he helped Liverpool clinch the English Premier League title, contributing six goals across the season. He also featured for Portugal in their dramatic UEFA Nations League final win over Spain last month, coming off the bench in extra time before his team triumphed in a penalty shootout.

In a statement, Liverpool FC expressed their devastation:

“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” it read. “We will be making no further comment at this time and request privacy for the family, friends, teammates, and club staff as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”

Portuguese football is also in mourning. Pedro Proenca, President of the Portuguese Football Federation, paid tribute to both brothers, describing Jota as “much more than a fantastic player... an extraordinary person, respected by all.”

“We have lost two champions,” he added. “The passing of Diogo and Andre Jota represents an irreparable loss for Portuguese football and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy.”

Everyone at the Premier League is shocked and devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre. Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo’s family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time. Football has lost a champion… pic.twitter.com/KG4coUHY1P

— Premier League (@premierleague) July 3, 2025

Jota made almost 50 appearances for the national team and was known as much for his spirited play as for his humility and positivity off the pitch. A minute’s silence was held ahead of Portugal’s Women’s Euros match against Spain on Thursday, following a request from the federation.

Jota’s career began at Paços de Ferreira in Portugal, before moving to Atletico Madrid in 2016. He was loaned to Porto and then moved to England, joining Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017. His performances at Wolves were electric, helping the club earn promotion and firmly establish themselves in the Premier League.

Wolves, where Jota is still adored by fans, released a heartfelt statement: “We are heartbroken. Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him. The memories he created will never be forgotten.”

He joined Liverpool in 2018, quickly becoming a vital part of Jurgen Klopp’s side. In the 2021-22 season, he played key roles in Liverpool’s FA Cup and League Cup victories, scoring in both final shootouts against Chelsea.

Off the field, Jota was a dedicated family man, sharing a quiet life away from the spotlight with Rute and their three young children.

The world of football – and the families of both men – are reeling from the loss.

Jota was 28. Andre Silva was 26.

Images: X (Formerly Twitter)

Iconic Hollywood star found dead at 67

Michael Madsen, the gravel-voiced Hollywood tough guy who made his mark in Quentin Tarantino's blood-soaked cinematic universe, has died. He was 67.

The veteran actor was found unresponsive at his Malibu home on Thursday morning and later pronounced dead, authorities confirmed. His manager, Ron Smith, said the cause of death was cardiac arrest.

Known for portraying menacing antiheroes and morally ambiguous outlaws, Madsen built a career playing unforgettable characters on the fringes of society – from the ear-slicing Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs to the washed-up hitman Budd in Kill Bill: Vol. 2.

“In the last two years Michael Madsen has been doing some incredible work with independent film... and was really looking forward to this next chapter in his life,” his team – managers Ron Smith and Susan Ferris, along with publicist Liz Rodriguez – said in a joint statement. “He was one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors, who will be missed by many.”

Over a career spanning four decades, Madsen became a cult figure, equally at home in gritty crime thrillers, indie dramas, and blockbuster fare. His smouldering screen presence, weary stare, and distinctive voice earned him dozens of roles — many of them dangerous, unpredictable, and unforgettable.

Born in Chicago on September 25, 1957, Madsen was the son of a firefighter and a filmmaker. His sister, Virginia Madsen, is an Oscar-nominated actor. He got his start on stage at Chicago’s renowned Steppenwolf Theatre, where he apprenticed under John Malkovich – an experience that shaped his early work in films like WarGames and The Natural.

But it was 1992’s Reservoir Dogs that turned Madsen into a cinematic icon. As Mr. Blonde, the sadistic criminal who danced gleefully to “Stuck in the Middle With You” while torturing a cop, he etched one of the most disturbing, charismatic villains in film history. His performance earned praise from critic Roger Ebert, who wrote, “Madsen… emerges with the kind of really menacing screen presence only a few actors achieve.”

He was originally cast to play Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, a role that eventually went to John Travolta after Madsen opted instead for Wyatt Earp – a decision he later said he regretted.

Still, his collaborations with Tarantino remained a defining element of his career. Beyond Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, Madsen appeared in The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, helping bring the director’s stylised worlds to life with quiet intensity and simmering menace.

Outside of Tarantino’s orbit, Madsen racked up credits in films like The Doors, Donnie Brasco, Thelma & Louise, Sin City, and even the James Bond adventure Die Another Day. He also lent his voice to video games including Grand Theft Auto III and Dishonored, and published poetry and photography that revealed a softer, more introspective side.

Though his name became synonymous with grit and danger, Madsen's passion for art in all forms endured. His independent film work remained prolific until the end, with several projects – Resurrection Road, Concessions, and Cookbook for Southern Housewives – still on the horizon.

Madsen was married three times, most recently to DeAnna Morgan. He is survived by four children, including actor Christian Madsen. His son Hudson tragically died in 2022, a loss that friends say weighed heavily on him.

Michael Madsen may have spent much of his screen life on the edge, but behind the gruff exterior was a fiercely devoted artist who never stopped working, creating or chasing the next role. He leaves behind a legacy of fearless performances, an indelible mark on American cinema – as well as a generation of fans who will never hear “Stuck in the Middle With You” the same way again.

Images: X (Formerly Twitter)

‘It feels like I am being forced to harm a child’: Why Aussie teachers are burning out

Australia is in the grip of a teacher shortage. Teachers are burning out, warning the job is no longer sustainable and leaving the profession.

We know this is due to excessive workloads, stress and abuse. But research suggests there is another element at play: some teachers are also experiencing moral injury.

Moral injury occurs when teachers are forced to act against their values – leaving them feeling disillusioned and complicit in harm. In my study of 57 Australian teachers, many shared emotionally-charged accounts of being put in impossible situations at work.

What is moral injury?

Moral injury is when professionals cannot act in line with their values due to external demands.

It differs from burnout or compassion fatigue: burnout stems from chronic stress and compassion fatigue comes from emotional overload.

Moral injury was initially developed in military psychology but has since been applied to healthcare and education – professions where high-stakes ethical decision-making and institutional failures often collide.

Previous studies on moral injury in schools have shown how rigid disciplinary policies, high-stakes testing regimes and chronic underfunding often force teachers to act in ways that contradict their professional judgement. This can lead to frustration, guilt and professional disillusionment.

Recent studies have reframed moral injury as a systemic issue rather than an individual psychological condition. This is because institutional constraints – such as inflexible accountability measures and bureaucratic inefficiencies – prevent teachers from fulfilling their ethical responsibilities.

My new study

This research stems from an initial study, which looked at burnout in Australian teachers.

The initial study included a national sample of 2,000 educators. This new study is a subset of 57 teachers who participated in follow-up surveys and focus groups. The teachers were a mix of primary and secondary teachers and some also held leadership positions within their schools.

While the original study focused on compassion fatigue and burnout, a striking pattern emerged: teachers repeatedly described moral conflicts in their work.

‘It feels like I’m being forced to harm a child’

A key theme of the new research was teachers having to enforce school or departmental policies they believed were harmful. This was particularly the case when it came to discipline. As one teacher described:

The policy says I should suspend a student for attendance issues, but their home life is falling apart. How does that help? It feels like I’m being forced to harm a child instead of helping them.

Others talked about having to focus on standardised tests (for example, NAPLAN), rather than using their professional judgement to meet children’s individual needs. This is a contentious issue for teachers.

As one high school teacher told us:

We’re asked to push students through the curriculum even when we know they haven’t grasped the basics […] but we’re the ones who carry the guilt.

A primary teacher similarly noted:

Teaching to the test means leaving so many kids behind. It’s not what education should be.

‘It’s heartbreaking’

Teachers also spoke about teaching in environments that were not adequately resourced. In some schools, teacher shortages were so severe that unqualified staff were delivering classes:

We’ve got classes being taught by teacher aides […] but that’s because we don’t have enough staff.

Or in other classes, students were not getting the help they needed.

Larger class sizes and fewer staff mean that the kids who need the most attention are getting the least. It’s heartbreaking.

The emotional impact was profound, as one high school teacher told us:

At some point, you stop fighting. You realise that no matter how many times you raise concerns, nothing changes. It’s like the system is designed to wear you down until you just comply.

What can schools do to prevent moral injury?

While these findings are confronting, teachers also gave positive examples of what can buffer against moral injury in the workplace. This involved listening to teachers and including them in policies and decisions.

One primary teacher told us how their school had changed their disciplinary approach:

Our school’s push for restorative justice instead of punitive measures has been a game changer. It lets us address the root causes of issues instead of just punishing kids.

Others talked about being asked to collaborate with school leadership to address discipline issues. As one primary teacher said:

We helped create a new behaviour management framework. Having a say in the process made all the difference.

What now?

My research indicates when teachers are consistently asked to compromise their ethics, they don’t just burn out, they question the integrity of the entire system.

This suggests if we want to keep teachers in classrooms, we need to do more than lighten their workloads. We need to make sure they are no longer placed in positions where doing their job means going against their professional values.

This means teachers need to feel heard, respected and empowered in classrooms and schools.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. 1200 children to undergo testing after child abuse charges laid

Warning: This article contains details of alleged child sexual abuse which may be distressing to some readers.

More than 1,200 children are being urged to undergo precautionary health screening after a former childcare worker was charged with more than 70 offences relating to alleged child sexual abuse at a centre in Melbourne’s south-west.

Joshua Dale Brown, 26, from Point Cook, has been charged over alleged sexual offences against eight children – aged between five months and two years – at the Creative Garden Early Learning Centre in Point Cook, where he worked between April 2022 and January 2023.

Victoria Police revealed Brown has worked at 20 childcare centres between 2017 and 2025, with investigations ongoing and additional allegations, including one involving a centre in Essendon, being pursued.

Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam said the case is “incredibly distressing”, describing the allegations as confronting and involving “some of our most vulnerable people in our community”.

The charges laid against Brown include sexual penetration of a child, producing child abuse material, and recklessly contaminating goods to cause alarm or anxiety.

Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad began investigating in May after they allegedly uncovered child abuse material and executed a search warrant at Brown’s Point Cook home. He had not previously been known to police and held a valid Working with Children Check at the time of his employment.

Police said the families of the eight alleged victims were notified last week.

“As you can imagine, this was deeply distressing for the families to hear,” said Acting Commander Janet Stevenson, adding that not all centres where Brown worked are believed to be connected to the alleged offences.

In a coordinated response, Victoria Police and the Department of Health have contacted more than 2,600 families whose children may have been at centres during Brown’s employment. About 1,200 children have been recommended for infectious disease testing “out of an abundance of caution”, authorities said.

Chief Health Officer Dr Christian McGrath said while the public health risk is low, the testing was being recommended due to a potential exposure risk during the relevant period.

“We do understand this is another distressing element to the situation and we’re taking this approach as a precaution,” Dr McGrath said, assuring families that any infections could be treated with antibiotics and that there is no broader risk to the public.

Letters sent to families on Tuesday stated: “At this stage, there is no evidence to suggest that your child has been offended against. If this changes, you will be contacted directly by Victoria Police.”

Support lines staffed by professionals have been established, and the government has promised free testing and assistance for affected families.

G8 Education, the operator of the Point Cook centre, said it was “extremely distressed” by the allegations and is fully cooperating with authorities. In a statement, the company said all legally required employment and background checks were carried out during Brown’s employment.

“G8 Education has no tolerance for any behaviour that compromises the safety or wellbeing of children,” the company said.

Brown has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court in September.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Images: ABC News / Supplied

"It hurts like a b***h!" TV star axed ahead of 2026 season

After nearly a decade at the helm, longtime Australian Survivor host Jonathan LaPaglia has been axed from the show ahead of its 2026 season.

LaPaglia, 55, who has hosted the Channel 10 reality series since its 2016 revival, confirmed in an emotional Instagram post that he had been “blindsided” by the decision, delivered via a phone call from the network.

“Australian Survivor has seen some of the most epic blindsides over the last 10 years, but this one might just be the craziest of them all… because it happened to me,” LaPaglia wrote.

He explained that Channel 10 thanked him for his contribution but said they were “going in a different direction” after recent ratings dips, prompting what he described as not a tribe swap, but a “HOST SWAP®.”

LaPaglia, who has already filmed the upcoming 13th season titled Australia v The World, described the decision as painful.

“I wish I could say, ‘Before we go to vote, tonight is a little different….no one’s going home.’ But I can’t. None of that non-elim bulls**t tonight! Someone IS going home. And with no idol in my back pocket, that someone is me,” he said.

He also paid tribute to the show’s crew, contestants and loyal fans, calling it “one of the greatest adventures” of his career. “It is without a doubt the hardest challenge of all to snuff my own torch,” he added. “But here goes; ‘JLP… the tribe has spoken.’”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by @jonathanlapaglia

While no official replacement has been named, it’s widely rumoured that Survivor alum and Deal or No Deal Island winner David Genat, 45, will step into the role.
Former Neighbours actress and pop star Holly Valance has reportedly split from her husband, billionaire property developer and Reform UK treasurer Nick Candy, after 13 years of marriage.

According to The Sun, the couple parted ways in recent weeks and are heading for divorce. Valance, 42, and Candy, 52, married in 2012 in a star-studded ceremony in California attended by 300 guests. They share two daughters.

“This has been a very difficult period for both Nick and Holly, and they are keeping things private out of respect for their family,” a family friend told the newspaper. “The joint parenting of their two amazing daughters remains their top priority.”

“They’ve had to juggle a demanding lifestyle. Between family, public life, and Nick’s intense work commitments, it’s been a tough balance,” the source added. “This is a family matter and they’re doing their best to handle things thoughtfully.”

A spokesperson for Valance said there would be no official comment, adding: “The privacy of all parties involved is respectfully requested.”

The couple are known for their political connections and involvement with Reform UK. In 2022, they visited former US President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort, accompanied by party leader Nigel Farage.

Valance first rose to fame playing Felicity ‘Flick’ Scully on Neighbours before launching a successful pop career, including her chart-topping debut single “Kiss Kiss” in 2002. Young Aussie doctor arrested after alleged discovery of thousands of child abuse files

A young Australian doctor has been charged with multiple child abuse offences after police allegedly uncovered more than 5000 files of explicit material on his mobile phone.

Gregory John Couch, 37, was arrested at a home in Albury, on the New South Wales–Victoria border, at 6am on Tuesday following a joint investigation between state police and federal border authorities.

Detectives from the NSW Sex Crime Squad allege Couch’s phone was seized by Australian Border Force officers at Melbourne Airport in May. A forensic examination of the device allegedly revealed thousands of images and videos depicting child abuse.

Footage released by NSW Police shows Couch – dressed in track pants, a jacket and ugg boots – being led from the home by Strike Force detectives before being taken into custody.

He was later charged at Albury Police Station with three offences: possession of child abuse material, use of a carriage service to access child abuse material, and intentionally importing prohibited tier two goods.

Police have confirmed there is no suggestion at this stage that any of the offences involved patients, with authorities stressing that no alleged misconduct is linked to his clinical work.

Couch had recently been working as a locum orthopaedic registrar at Albury Wodonga Health (AWH), engaged through a third-party medical workforce agency. In a statement issued Wednesday, AWH confirmed the doctor is no longer employed by the service.

“We understand the seriousness of the charges and the matter is now before the courts,” the statement read. “AWH has no indication that any alleged misconduct occurred at our facilities or involved our patients or staff. All standard background checks, including Working with Children and police checks, were passed prior to his commencement.”

Originally from Sydney, Couch previously worked at Liverpool Hospital and had recently relocated to the Gold Coast. His social media presence includes photos from his wedding in 2021 and family images taken in the years prior.

Tragically, his twin brother Andrew – also a doctor – died suddenly in his sleep in 2017. That same year, Couch accepted Andrew’s posthumous Master of Medicine degree from the University of Sydney, surrounded by family. Memorial awards have since been established in Andrew's honour by both the university and the Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.

Couch remains before the courts and the investigation is ongoing.

Image: NSW Police Force

Karl's Origin bet sees NRL star run nude across Bondi Beach

Nothing kicks off the weekend quite like your morning coffee, a cheeky croissant, and a surprise unblurred penis on national television. That’s exactly what Today show fans copped around 6am this morning when Channel 9’s breakfast crew decided, apparently, that broadcast standards were merely a suggestion.

Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo were front and centre for the chaos, as sports reporter Danika Mason crossed live from Bondi Beach. Mason was joined by retired NRL star Aaron Woods – who, thanks to a State of Origin bet gone sideways, had only his dignity to keep him warm (spoiler: it didn’t).

Woods had promised to streak if NSW lost Game 2. Queensland, being Queensland, delivered the goods in Perth on Wednesday night, so Woods kept his word, stripped down, and bolted starkers into the surf. The Today team howled with laughter as he made his break for the briny deep – so far, so PG.

But then Woods did what no one expected. In what can only be described as a truly bold move, he turned to face the camera. Editors had roughly zero seconds to react. Viewers had roughly zero seconds to look away. And the Today show had roughly zero seconds before the complaints line started ringing off the hook.

“No! Don’t show it!” shrieked Abo, as newsreader Jayne Azzopardi presumably contemplated her next career move. Meanwhile, Woods grinned like a man who knew exactly what he'd done.

Danika Mason, ever the professional, summed up the moment with the sort of innuendo that will no doubt earn her a spot at next year’s Logies: “The smallest sporting event I’ve seen.”

The man of the hour eventually reappeared on screen – mercifully clothed – declaring, “I’m feeling good, it was good fun. It was a long run, it was like ‘when is this water going to get closer?’” A sentiment shared by viewers who were wondering when their corneas might recover.

It turns out Woods' bare-all sprint wasn’t just eyebrow-raising, but technically illegal. NSW Premier Chris Minns had warned him beforehand, but Woods seemed blissfully unaware that public nudity is frowned upon – even at Bondi. “But at the beach!” he protested, in what’s sure to become the rallying cry of accidental exhibitionists everywhere.

Minns, showing off his dry wit, suggested Woods try his luck at one of Sydney’s many legal nude beaches next time. “It’s been illegal forever,” he deadpanned on radio. Woods could now be staring down a fine, though fans are hoping common sense (and perhaps a sense of humour) prevails.

Meanwhile, Woods’ mate Beau Ryan said the footy star was “genuinely shocked” by the revelation. “You can’t be nude in public,” Ryan told him. Woods: “But at the beach!” Ryan: “Still public, mate.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by thetodayshow (@thetodayshow)

To add another layer to the inter-state banter, Minns himself has a State of Origin bet with Queensland Premier David Crisafulli – the loser must star in the other state’s advertising campaign. So at least if Woods ends up in court, he can rest easy knowing that somewhere out there, a Premier might soon be forced to smile awkwardly in a “beautiful one day, perfect the next” ad.

In the meantime, Today producers are probably googling “delay button for live TV” and breakfast viewers are recovering from seeing a little more than they bargained for with their Weet-Bix.

Images: Today show

Love is well and truly in the air for the Matildas, with midfielder Katrina Gorry tying the knot with her long-time partner Clara Markstedt in a breathtaking beach wedding on Hamilton Island.

Just days after teammate Ellie Carpenter wed her partner Daniëlle van de Donk, Gorry and Markstedt exchanged vows in front of about 70 guests, including Matildas teammates Charli Grant and Michelle Heyman. The couple kept the vibe relaxed and joyful, with guests dancing the night away under the stars.

"We just wanted people to relax, have fun, and have a good time," Markstedt told New Idea.

The pair’s children played special roles on the day. Gorry’s three-year-old daughter Harper was a proud flower girl, while their one-year-old son Koby watched on, with Markstedt adding, “We wanted Koby to be able to walk next to her, but he's a little late!”

Both brides looked radiant in outfits by Melbourne designer Anna Campbell. Gorry chose a two-piece set featuring a cropped blouse and A-line skirt, while Markstedt stunned in a floral one-sleeved gown with a front slit.

The couple, who met in 2021 when Gorry joined Swedish club Vittsjö GIK and became engaged in June 2023, said their “I dos” with the ocean as their backdrop – a perfect setting for their love story.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by New Idea Magazine (@newideamagazine)

Their wedding follows the recent celebration of Matildas defender Ellie Carpenter, 25, who married Dutch football star Daniëlle van de Donk, 33, in France.
