Iconic singer reveals sad diagnosis

Morten Harket, the iconic voice behind A-ha’s global smash "Take on Me", has revealed he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease – a progressive condition that may bring an end to his singing career.

The 65-year-old Norwegian singer shared the news in a moving interview published on the band’s official website, explaining that although treatment has eased some of the condition’s physical toll, it has also affected his voice – the very heart of his artistry.

“I don’t feel like singing, and for me that’s a sign,” Harket said candidly. “As things stand now, that’s out of the question.”

For the past year, Harket has undergone deep brain stimulation, a complex treatment involving two surgeries to implant electrodes on both sides of his brain. The procedure delivers electrical impulses that help control tremors and muscle stiffness, but in Harket’s case, has also dulled his soaring vocal range.

Despite the gravity of the diagnosis, Harket said he feels at peace with it. He credits his 94-year-old father for encouraging him to “use whatever works” in coping with the challenges of the degenerative disorder.

“There’s so much to weigh up,” he said. “It’s a difficult balancing act between taking the medication and managing its side effects.”

A-ha last toured in 2020 and played what may be their final show together in 2022 at the Hollywood Bowl. Harket said he has continued to work on new music but is unsure whether the songs will ever be finished.

Still, in classic form, he offered fans words of hope rather than despair.

“Don’t worry about me,” he said. “Spend your energy addressing real problems… and know that I am being taken care of.”

Images: Instagram

Tributes pour in for M*A*S*H icon Loretta Swit

The television world is mourning the loss of Loretta Swit, the acclaimed actress best known for her role as Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan on the groundbreaking series M*A*S*H, who passed away on May 30 at the age of 87.

Swit was found in her New York City apartment at approximately 10am Friday by her housekeeper, her publicist Harlan Boll confirmed. While her official cause of death has not yet been released, authorities believe she died of natural causes.

Known for her wit, warmth, and deep humanity both on- and off-screen, Swit was one of the few original cast members to remain with M*A*S*H for its entire 11-season run. Her portrayal of the initially one-dimensional “Hot Lips” Houlihan evolved into one of the most complex, heartfelt characters on television, earning her ten consecutive Emmy nominations and two wins, in 1980 and 1982.

“More than acting her part, she created it,” wrote her longtime co-star Alan Alda, 89, on X. “She worked hard in showing the writing staff how they could turn the character from a one-joke sexist stereotype into a real person – with real feelings and ambitions.”

Alda, who played the beloved Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce alongside Swit, added, “We celebrated the day the script came out listing her character, not as Hot Lips, but as Margaret. Loretta made the most of her time here.”

Jamie Farr, 90, who portrayed Corporal Maxwell Q. Klinger, paid tribute to his “adopted sister”, remembering a bond that began the day they met. “From the first time I met her, on what was supposed to be a one-day appearance on M*A*S*H, we embraced each other. That became a lifetime friendship. I can't begin to express how much she will be missed.”

Mike Farrell, 86, who joined the series in its fourth season as B.J. Hunnicutt, simply posted a black-and-white photo of Swit to Instagram with the caption: “Loretta … 1937–2025 🖤.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mike Farrell (@mike_farrell_official)

Swit’s presence within the MASH* family remained strong long after the show ended in 1983. In a 2017 interview with Fox News, she reflected, “We see each other quite frequently. Every time we lose a comrade, it’s a body blow. These aren't casual acquaintances from years ago. This is my family.”

Off-screen, Swit was a passionate animal rights advocate and longtime vegan, having adopted the lifestyle in 1981. Lisa Lange of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals praised her activism, calling her “a major champion for all animals”. Lange added, “The world has lost a kind soul and animals a true friend.”

Swit’s contributions to entertainment were recognised in 1989 when she received a gold star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But to millions of fans, she will always be remembered for her fierce talent, her drive to elevate female characters on screen, and her unwavering kindness.

As tributes pour in from co-stars, fans and admirers, it is clear that Loretta Swit leaves behind a legacy of compassion, authenticity, and brilliance – both as an artist and a human being. She is survived by the countless lives she touched through her work, her advocacy and her friendship.

Images: Instagram

Home and Away icon bids farewell after 33 years

In news that has sent shockwaves through lounge rooms across the country, Lynne McGranger, the heart and soul of Home and Away, is preparing to hang up her iconic apron and bid farewell to her beloved character, Irene Roberts.

After an impressive 33 years of delivering heartfelt performances, dishing out sage advice and reminding every misbehaving local to "listen here, girlie", McGranger will be making her emotional exit later this year.

Seven has promised fans that Irene’s departure will be one for the history books – no, not via the usual dramatic Summer Bay methods of freak storms, runaway cars or inexplicable amnesia, but an “emotional exit” that “cannot be missed”.

While details are tightly under wraps, we can only speculate: Will Irene sail off into the sunset? Open a surf club for wayward teens? Or finally take that well-earned break from all the Summer Bay chaos and settle somewhere where people aren’t constantly getting lost at sea?

Fans, naturally, have been left reeling. Social media has been flooded with messages of heartbreak, nostalgia and a desperate plea for Irene to return – even if only for a guest appearance or as a ghostly vision (a Home and Away classic).

Lynne herself has spoken out about the farewell, calling it “bittersweet” to leave a role that has been not just a job, but a family. "After almost 33 years in my dream role and working every day with people I love, respect and whom I now consider family, it’s bittersweet to be closing the chapter on what has been the best and longest gig of my life,” she said.

Ever the class act, Lynne expressed gratitude to the crew, writers and, of course, the fans – those who have stuck by Irene through every high, low and dramatic face-off at the Diner.

And let’s not forget Irene’s legendary status. TV Week readers ranked her as the second Greatest Australian TV Character of All Time (although we suspect if the voting had been left solely to Home and Away die-hards, she’d have taken the crown).

Julie McGauran, Home and Away’s Executive Producer, summed it up best: “Lynne’s extraordinary portrayal of down-to-earth Irene Roberts is why the character is held with such great affection by fans around the world.”

Despite wrapping up filming in March, Irene will still grace our screens for months to come – enough time for fans to prepare themselves emotionally (and stock up on tissues). In the meantime, Lynne will return to the stage with her comedy show, "The Grandparents Club", proving that she has no plans to slow down anytime soon.

The farewell will undoubtedly be a tearjerker, but if we know anything about Irene Roberts, she’ll be leaving Summer Bay the same way she lived in it: with heart, humour and a no-nonsense attitude.

As one fan put it perfectly, "Now listen here, girlie, you are going to be missed soooo much."

And that, as they say, is the bottom line.

Image: Instagram

Readers response: What does ‘self-care’ look like for you now compared to earlier years?

We asked our readers what self-care looks like for them during their retirement years. Here's what you said.

Anne Henderson - More time and focus on my strength and fitness, and all of those things that will help with independence in old age. More saying no to society’s expectations … (including whether my 70 year old face and my clothing are acceptable to others)…. my routine has become simpler for this reason, not more complicated. Self care in older age to me is liberation from the shackles of all of the above.

Marie Jones - Definitely focusing on strength and balance hence exercise class and walking. Happy with my grey hair but always moisturising and have toned down make-up. I wear what's comfortable for me.

Dawn Dominick - Endless moisturising of my entire body not just my face any more.

Margie Buckingham - Love having long baths to relax in. Going to the podiatrist every month. Moisturising twice daily. Not wearing makeup unless it’s a special occasion. Wearing comfortable clothes. Considering stopping the every 5 week hair colouring.

Sixties pop icon passes away aged 78

British pop icon Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78, with the BBC confirming the news by citing a statement from her spokesperson.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull,” the statement read.

“Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.”

Faithfull was best known for her debut single As Tears Go By which reached the UK top 10 in 1964.

She was also famously the girlfriend of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger in the 60s, becoming a muse for the rock star, inspiring songs such as Wild Horses and You Can't Always Get What You Want.

Tributes have poured in for the singer, with Jagger describing her as "a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer and a great actress," saying he was "so saddened" by the loss.

His Rolling Stones bandmate Keith Richards shared that he was "so sad" following her death and that he "will miss her".

Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood posted an old picture of him, Faithfull and Richards in a recording studio with the caption "Farewell dear Marianne".

He then shared a more recent photo of the pair with the caption: "Marianne will be dearly missed. Bless her xx".

Throughout her life, the singer had suffered multiple health problems, including bulimia, breast cancer and emphysema caused by decades of smoking.

After a period of drug addiction and homelessness in the early 1970s, Faithfull resurrected her career with the critically acclaimed album Broken English in 1979. She also wrote three autobiographies and had a film acting career.

Her most recent comeback was in 2020, and despite falling into a coma and being hospitalised for three weeks after catching Covid, she recovered.

In March 2022, the singer moved to Denville Hall, a retirement home for actors and other professional performers in London.

Faithfull is survived by her son, Nicholas Dunbar, who she shares with ex-husband and artist John Dunbar.

Image: Bill Francis/Kobal/ Shutterstock Editorial

"Utterly devastated": Iconic Irish singer dies at age 65

Iconic Irish singer Linda Nolan has died at the age of 65.

The singer who, along with her sisters Coleen, Maureen, Bernie, Denise, and Anne, belonged to the Irish family group The Nolans, passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Linda was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and after years struggling with the illness, was told in 2011 that her cancer was in remission.

In 2017, the cancer returned as secondary breast cancer, which continued to spread until it reached her brain in 2023.

Linda's sister Coleen shared the news of her passing, describing her sister as a "beacon of love, kindness, and strength" in a post on Instagram.

She wrote, "I am utterly devastated by the passing of my sister, Linda. Linda was a beacon of love, kindness, and strength. Her wit, humour, and laughter were infectious, and her presence could light up any room."

"Linda had a heart full of compassion and always knew how to bring comfort and joy to those around her.

"Her memory will live on in the many lives she touched, and while we will miss her more than words can express, we take solace in the love and warmth she shared with all of us. Rest in peace, Linda."

Coleen concluded, "You will forever be in our hearts."

Linda was part of an Irish family girl group that became prominent in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The family relocated to England in 1962 where they performed under the name The Singing Nolans before becoming The Nolan Sisters in 1974 and later just The Nolans in 1980.

They gained fame with their hit songs I'm in the Mood for Dancing, Gotta Pull Myself Together, and Don't Make Waves.

Linda was not the only Nolan to face a breast cancer diagnosis, as older sister Anne, 74, and younger sister Bernie, who died 2013 aged 52, also suffered the disease.

Do natural fabrics really keep us cooler in summer? Here’s the science

Nisa Salim, Swinburne University of Technology

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned Australia is facing one of the hottest summers on record. As the weather warms, many of us reach for light-coloured clothes in natural fabrics, such as cotton and linen.

But why are natural fabrics like these so much better at keeping us cool when the weather is hot?

Here’s what the science says.

Natural fabrics and sweat: a match made in heaven

In hot weather, we sweat. As sweat evaporates, it carries heat away, which helps cool the body down.

In hot weather, then, we want clothes that help take moisture away from the body as efficiently as possible.

Natural fabrics are made using fibres extracted from plant- or animal-based sources such as cotton, linen, hemp, wool and silk.

The primary component of all plant-based fibres is cellulose. Animal-based fibres are made up of proteins such as keratin and silk fibroin.

Cellulose molecules are rich in compounds called hydroxyl groups that attract water and moisture. In scientific terms, they are hydrophilic – they love water.

So, clothing made of cotton and linen is highly hydrophilic. It tends to absorb moisture and disperse it across the fabric, allowing it to evaporate more easily.

This takes the sweat away quickly, making it more comfortable and breathable and allowing us to stay cool in sweltering temperatures.

One downside of the natural fabrics is they wrinkle quickly (some people, of course, like that look).

And on a really hot, sweaty day, natural fabrics can get heavy and wet.

Animal fibres are basically proteins, and their properties vary depending on the source.

Wool has been bio-engineered over millions of years to be comfortable to wear. Wool fibres are hydrophilic on the inside and hydrophobic on the outside, meaning they’re both water resistant and good at wicking moisture away.

On the other hand, silk fabrics are very good at helping regulate temperature; they keep us cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather.

Synthetic fabrics: less wrinkly, more sweaty

Synthetic fabrics, on the other hand, are lighter and tend to wrinkle less.

Common synthetic fabrics (such as polyester, nylon and acrylic) are all made from petroleum-based chemicals.

Most synthetic fibres are made of long chains of hydrogen and carbon atoms and do not contain the hydroxyl groups we discussed earlier.

Such fibres are therefore hydrophobic – they hate water. This means the water can’t spread evenly across the fabric and evaporate easily.

They trap sweat against the skin, making the clothes less breathable and comfortable when the weather is warm and humid.

However, some synthetic fabrics used in certain types of active wear can wick sweat away from body.

And some semi-synthetic fabrics such as rayon or tencel (which are made from wood pulp or cotton with synthetic fibres) are more breathable than other synthetic fabrics such as polyester or nylon.

Fabric weave makes a difference, too

The colour of the clothing is also a contributing factor to keep you cool during summer. Light colours reflect sunlight away from you and help to keep the body cooler.

There is some evidence dark colours absorb the sunlight and associated heat, making the surface of the skin warmer than normal.

Another factor affecting breathability and comfort of clothing is the way the fabrics are woven.

Fabrics that are loosely woven (sometimes known as “open weave”) with thinner materials naturally have more airflow, which helps you keep cool.

For a quick, non-scientific test, hold a fabric up and see how much light passes through it. The more light you can see, the more breathable it likely is.

The way the fabric is treated can play a role, too; such as for softening and wrinkle resistance.

Using a fabric softener when you do a load of laundry usually doesn’t affect fabric breathability; softeners modify the surface of the fabric but don’t change the internal structure or porous nature of the fabrics.

Wrinkle resistance is the ability of the fabric to stay smooth and polished even after washing. Synthetic fabrics are inherently wrinkle resistant. Natural fibres are more prone to wrinkles but can be chemically treated on the fabric surface during manufacturing to make them wrinkle resistant.

Such treatments, however, may form layers on top of the fabric blocking the airflow, leading them to be less breathable.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Billionaire fashion icon dies in freak accident

Billionaire fashion icon Isak Andic has passed away in a freak accident aged 71.

The founder of Spanish clothing retailer Mango, one of Europe's largest fashion groups, was hiking with his family members in the Montserrat caves near Barcelona when he fell 100 metres from a cliff.

Police confirmed his death after they were called at around 1pm local time on Saturday. Local media outlet El Pais reported that a helicopter and specialised mountain unit were sent to the scene.

"Isak has been an example for all of us. He dedicated his life to Mango, leaving an indelible mark thanks to his strategic vision, his inspiring leadership and his unwavering commitment to values that he himself imbued in our company, Mango’s CEO, Toni Ruiz, said in a statement.

“His legacy reflects the achievements of a business project marked by success, and also by his human quality, his proximity and the care and affection that he always had and at all times conveyed to the entire organisation.

“His departure leaves a huge void but all of us are, in some way, his legacy and the testimony of his achievements,” he added.

“It is up to us … to ensure that Mango continues to be the project that Isak was ambitious and proud of.”

"In these extremely difficult times we share the pain of the family as if it were our own," he concluded in the statement posted onto the fashion brand's website.

Andic was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1953 before emigrating to Spain with his family in 1969.

He created the fashion line with the help of his brother, Nahman, in Barcelona in 1984, with the brand now operating almost 3,000 outlets in 120 countries.

Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, paid tribute to the businessman on social media, saying “My condolences to the family of Isak Andic, founder of Mango, on his tragic death in an accident in the Salnitre de Collbató caves."

“All my love and recognition for your great work and business vision, which has turned this Spanish firm into a world leader in fashion."

Image: Mango Website

"Non-fixable": Neighbours icon reveals terminal diagnosis

Veteran actor Ian Smith, beloved for his role as Harold Bishop on the long-running soap Neighbours, has filmed his final scenes, marking an emotional farewell to the show and his career.

At 85, Smith revealed his decision to step away from acting follows a terminal diagnosis of pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

“It isn’t just my last day in Neighbours, it’s my last day of work,” Smith told 10 News First reporter Angela Bishop. “I found out a few months back that I have cancer, that I have a very aggressive, non-fixable cancer, and they expect me to die.”

Smith, who has undergone three rounds of treatment, including immunotherapy, expressed his determination to maintain his quality of life for as long as possible. “I’ve really put my hand up just to be a guinea pig, I think, plus the fact I don’t want to die. I want to stay alive with quality as long as I can,” he said. “I wake up every morning hoping there’s no pain because I know that’s the beginning of the bad part.”

Smith, a staple of Ramsay Street since 1987, was honoured by cast and crew on his final day of filming. The emotional farewell included heartfelt speeches, tears and hugs, reflecting the profound impact Smith has had on the Neighbours family.

“There were real tears,” Smith shared. “In fact, one young fella worried me a bit. I had to follow up and make sure he was alright the next day. It knocked me out a bit honestly.”

Smith’s final storyline features the return of Anne Charleston, who famously played Harold’s wife, Madge. Charleston will reprise a new role in the upcoming episodes. Executive Producer Jason Herbison praised Smith’s contributions, saying, “The way the residents of Ramsay Street feel about Harold is how we all feel about Ian – we couldn’t love him more than we do.

“Despite the challenges he was facing with his health, he wanted to give Harold a proper send-off. It was a very emotional moment on set as we paid tribute to him and the incredible contribution he has made to the show.”

Smith’s personal life has been marked by loss, having endured the passing of his wife, Gail, of five decades, and several family members to cancer. His own health battles have included prostate cancer and a stroke, yet he has remained a resilient and cherished figure in Australian television.

Network 10 expressed their sorrow over his diagnosis and immense gratitude for his contributions. “Ian has brought joy, laughter and inspiration to audiences all around the world for decades,” a spokesperson said. “Along with the cast and crew and all his fans from around the world, we will support Ian in any way we can during this difficult time.”

Smith’s final scenes on Neighbours will air in April 2025, bringing a 30-year chapter of television history to a close.

Images: Supplied
