Aussie breaker Raygun embraced as cult hero by Olympic team

Rachael "Raygun" Gunn has become the cult hero of the Australian Olympic team.

While the breakdancer did not score a single point for her unconventional routines, with her performance garnering billions of views and being mocked online through endless memes, she was the star within the Aussie team.

The social media feeds of the nation's Olympic stars have offered a rare glimpse into the athletes celebration of the 2024 Paris Games well before the closing ceremony on Monday.

Raygun was seen breakdancing in a circle as the team surrounded her and cheered her every move.

Angus Widdicombe, member of the Aussie men’s eight rowing team, then put her on top of his shoulders through a guard of honour of the athletes.

Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn was Australia’s female representative in breakdancing’s Olympic debut.

While she failed to score a point in her three-round robin matches, her performance that included a kangaroo hop and sprinkler, immediately went viral and has made headlines around the world, with many trolling her.

Australian Olympic Chief de Mission Anna Meares said that the online trolling directed at the dancer was misogynistic, as she had to break into a male-dominated sport.

“Raygun is an absolutely loved member of this Olympic team," she said.

“She has represented the Olympic team, the Olympic spirit, with great enthusiasm. And I absolutely love her courage. I love her character and I feel very disappointed for her, that she has come under the attack that she has.”

“In 2008, she was locked in a room crying, being involved in a male-dominated sport as the only woman,” Meares continued.

“And it took great courage for her to continue on and fight for her opportunity to participate in a sport that she loved.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also backed her performance on Sunday saying: “Good on her and a big shout-out to her."

"That is in the Australian tradition of people having a go. She’s had a go representing our country and that’s a good thing,” he said.

“The Olympics is about people participating in sport,” the Prime Minister said.

“That’s a good thing and Raygun had a crack. Whether (athletes have) won gold medals or just done their best, that is all we ask for. It’s the participating that is really important.”

Images: Instagram

Convicted child rapist qualifies for Olympic team

A convicted child rapist has qualified to represent The Netherlands at the upcoming 2024 Olympics.

Steven van de Velde will head to Paris in July to represent the country in beach volleyball, much to the dismay of many.

Van de Velde's selection has caused outrage given he pleaded guilty to three counts of rape in 2014 and was sentenced to four years in jail.

He was convicted in 2016 and only served one year behind bars.

The athlete, now 29, admitted to meeting the then 12-year-old on Facebook before travelling to England from Amsterdam to meet her when he raped her, after being aware of her age.

At the 2016 sentencing, the judge labelled Van de Velde's Olympic aspirations a "shattered dream" due to the conviction.

However, the Netherlands Olympic Committee (NOC) have given him another chance, despite the fact that the British Olympic Committee is allegedly uncomfortable with the Van de Velde selection.

"Since 2018, Steven van de Velde has been participating in international beach volleyball tournaments again following an intensive, professionally supervised trajectory," the NOC said in a statement.

Despite the unusual selection, the International Olympic Committee allows each nation to select its own athletes and does not veto any picks.

Following his release from jail, Van de Velde said in an interview in 2018, "I made that choice in my life when I wasn't ready, I was a teenager still figuring things out."

"I was sort of lost and now I have so much more life experience, aside from just being incarcerated. Any form of help would have been very very helpful, maybe that's what I would have told myself, seek help."

Image credits: Xinhua News Agency/Shutterstock Editorial

"These can't be real": Boomers' Olympic uniform sparks instant outrage

Australia’s basketball uniforms for the Paris Olympics have hit a new low, or should we say a new “high jump” with the kit’s release on social media sparking a full-blown hoopla.

Designed by Asics, these uniforms have quickly become the butt of jokes faster than a basketball rolling down a court.

The “outfit” features a bright yellow singlet with “Australia” across the chest, an Asics logo on one shoulder, and the coat of arms on the other – and the reactions have been nothing short of a slam dunk of disdain.

Daniel Moldovan, a basketball player manager with a flair for theatrics, didn’t hold back. “Let’s just call a spade a spade," he wrote on X, "yet another embarrassment for a team full of NBA players at the peak of their sport. Our guys are going to be dressed like marathon runners. If the old adage ‘Look good, feel good’ has any truth to it, then our guys are going to feel like trash.”

He even suggested that whoever approved these “marathon runner uniforms” for the Boomers should have their citizenship revoked. “What the f*** is this abomination?” he asked. Even past and present Boomers players chimed in.

Josh Giddey, Oklahoma City Thunder’s rising star, simply commented “lol absolute joke”. Jock Landale of the Houston Rockets humorously mused, “Looks like we are off to throw a javelin.” And Andrew Bogut, never one to mince words, quipped that the Australian Olympic Committee had Stevie Wonder design the uniforms. Ouch.

Let’s just call a spade a spade. This is a fucking DISGRACE. Yet another embarrassment for a team full of NBA players at the peak of their sport.

Our guys are going to be dressed like marathon runners.

If the old adage of “Look good feel good” has a modicum of truth to it,… https://t.co/mSxlLeHvGl

— Daniel Moldovan (@AgentMoldovan) June 11, 2024

The social media backlash was swift and savage. Benyam Kidane of NBA Australia tweeted, “Nah, this disrespectful. Boomers gonna bring home the gold in the decathlon.” Sam Vecenie from The Athletic added, “Pumped to see the Australian basketball team compete in the high jump at the Olympics. Probably not the optimal use of their skill, but will be fun to see them in these track-and-field-ass uniforms.”

NBA Straya was in on the joke too: “Great to see we’re following in a hallowed Aussie tradition and getting Bali knockoff jerseys for the national team.” And one user couldn’t believe their eyes: “Is April Fools Day a different day? These can’t be real!!”

The ASICS website, in its defence, claims the design incorporates Indigenous Australian artwork and Japanese design features. They boasted about the recycled fabrics and the artworks by Paul Fleming and David Bosun. While noble, it seems like they may have missed the mark on “aesthetic appeal”.

The Boomers are set to kick off their Paris Olympics campaign on July 27, with warm-up matches against Japan, China, Serbia and the USA. Let’s just hope they’re not mistaken for a track-and-field team when they step onto the court. After all, no one wants to see them dribble with a javelin.

In the end, perhaps the real win would be for the Boomers to win gold while sporting these “unique” threads. It might just prove that in the world of fashion, sometimes the ugliest outfits make for the most unforgettable moments.

Images: Asics

Entire Knox team stood down after abusing female players

Knox Football Netball Club (KFNC) has stood down its entire mens development indefinitely, following reports of their "inexcusable behaviour" towards an opposing women's team.

Reports emerged this week that players from the Melbourne suburban football club rated and attempted to trip over Donvale's female players as they entered the field last Sunday.

“They held out their legs to trip the women over and used the phrases yes, no, mediocre, rating each female player. The players were rightly upset but they played out the rest of the game,” veteran reporter Jacqui Felgate said.

“I hope the men that did this … are held to account," she continued.

KFNC immediately looked into the incident, and on Thursday announced that the whole team had been “stood down indefinitely pending the outcome of the independent investigation” in an open letter shared on Facebook.

They also said: "KFNC recognises that such behaviour is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the values of the club."

KNFC will also implement a comprehensive behavioural and domestic violence education program across the entire club.

“Participation in this program will be mandatory for all members, with a ‘no education, no play’ rule in effect,” Knox said.

“KFNC is establishing an ongoing partnership with a local family violence shelter for both education and charitable support.

“We understand the gravity of this situation and the importance of taking swift and decisive action. We are committed to learning from this incident and ensuring that such behaviour is not repeated in the future.

“Our club stands for inclusivity, respect, and safety for all members, and we will continue to uphold these values in everything we do.”

Felgate reacted to Knox's open letter and said that the action was “the very least they could do”.

“Women play sport — they should not be subjected to abuse on the field, off the field, whatever, on the base of their sex,” Felgate said.

A Donvale player also spoke to the Herald Sun anonymously and said that her team were already "uncomfortable" before the comments began.

"We all realised what happened a lot of us broke down in tears and just felt helpless," she told the publication.

"I’ve had individual men come up to me and say things that aren’t really appropriate but this was a group of 20 men standing, laughing and making comments about us.

“The only thing I want to emphasise is the amount of other men from Knox that were around them not saying anything," she added.

“Unfortunately I really do believe that men aren’t going to stop behaving like this unless other men call it out, they don’t listen to women.”

Image: Facebook/ Knox Football Club

Kochie and Karl team up for a new business venture

David Koch and Karl Stefanovic has reportedly put their differences aside after a long-running rivalry, as they contemplate embarking on a new business venture together.

After hosting rival morning television shows for decades, Kochie and Karl have squashed their beef with each other after Kochie retired from Sunrise earlier this year after 21 years on the air.

Kochie chatted candidly on a recent episode of the Something to Talk About podcast, sharing details of his complicated relationships with Karl.

He said despite running in similar circles due to the nature of their careers, they were never close friends.

However, after Kochie left Sunrise, the pair caught up for a lunch date, and were joined by Kochie's old co-host Nat Barr.

"Would you believe the two weeks after finishing on Sunrise, Karl and I and Nat had lunch together?" he said.

"I’ve come across Karl a number of times at different functions – really nice bloke, incredibly respectful, didn’t know him much at all."

But, it appears the two have now hit it off, as they are contemplating starting a podcast together.

Kochie continued, "So we had lunch together and he’s talking about wanting to do a podcast together, funnily enough, so something might come of it."

The 67-year-old was the the longest-serving breakfast TV anchor in Australian history when he left Sunrise two months ago.

He was replaced by former professional sprinter Matt 'Shirvo' Shirvington, who had been filling in for Kochie for several years.

Karl has been the host of the Today show for 14 years, beginning his hosting journey alongside Tracy Grimshaw in 2005.

"Impunity for macho actions is over": Why the entire Spanish World Cup team has quit

Luis Rubiales, the head of Spanish soccer, has rejected calls for his resignation despite facing widespread backlash for his actions following Spain's Women's World Cup victory.

Rubiales came under fire after he was seen grabbing star player Jenni Hermoso's head and kissing her on the lips during the medal ceremony. The incident has led to a revolt among 56 national team members and condemnation from the government for what they deemed to be "macho actions".

A collective statement, issued through their union, was signed by all 23 members of the winning squad, including Hermoso, as well as 32 other team members. In the statement, they declared their refusal to participate in international matches as long as Rubiales remains at the helm of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

Within the same statement, Hermoso refuted Rubiales' assertion that the kiss was consensual (see below for the statement in full). The controversial kiss occurred at the medal ceremony after Spain's victory over England in the World Cup final in Sydney.

Rubiales' elderly mother, Angeles Bejar, has now taken an extreme stance in support of her son, initiating a hunger strike and seeking refuge in a church, citing a perceived "inhumane witch-hunt" against him. In parallel, the regional presidents of the Spanish football federation have called for Rubiales' resignation.

This series of events coincided with Spanish prosecutors' announcement of a preliminary investigation into Rubiales' conduct during the World Cup final, focusing on the kiss with Hermoso. The Spanish national court stated that the investigation would explore whether Rubiales' actions could be considered sexual assault.

Despite facing pressure to step down, Rubiales has resisted these calls and maintained that the kiss was just a “little peck” that was “spontaneous, mutual, euphoric and consensual”. He also claimed that he asked Hermoso if he could kiss her and that she said “OK”.

The Spanish government, lacking the authority to directly remove Rubiales from his position, has sought legal avenues to suspend him using a sports tribunal. Victor Francos, the head of the state-run sports council, emphasised the government's determination to ensure accountability in this matter, comparing it to a Spanish soccer "Me Too" movement.

Criticism of Rubiales' behavior has escalated since Spain's victory, with Acting Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz condemning his actions as "unacceptable." The government has been urged to take swift action against such behaviour and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

“The government must act and take urgent measures: impunity for macho actions is over. Rubiales cannot continue in office,” Diaz wrote on social media.

In response, FIFA initiated disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales, prompted by Hermoso's statement expressing her union's commitment to defending her rights and condemning acts like the one she experienced.

The situation remains tense as Rubiales continues to face demands for his resignation, while he remains defiant and resolute in his position as the head of Spanish soccer.

Hermoso’s full statement:

“After achieving one of the most desired successes of my sports career and after a few days of reflection, I want to wholeheartedly thank my teammates, fans, followers, the media and all of you who have made this dream come true; Your work and unconditional support have been a fundamental part of winning the World Cup.

“In reference to what happened today. Although it is true that for my part I do not want to interfere with the multiple legal processes in progress, I feel compelled to denounce that the words of Mr. Luis Rubiales explaining the unfortunate incident are categorically false and part of the manipulative culture that he himself has generated.

“I clarify that at no time did the conversation to which Mr. Luis Rubiales referred to take place and that, far from it, his kiss was consented. In the same way I want to reiterate as I did at the time that this fact had not been to my liking.

“The situation caused me a shock due to the context of the celebration, and with the passage of time and after delving a little deeper into those first feelings, I feel the need to denounce this fact since I consider that no person, in any area work, sports or social should be a victim of this type of non-consensual behaviour.

“I felt vulnerable and the victim of aggression, an impulsive, sexist, out of place act and without any kind of consent on my part. I just wasn’t respected. I was asked to make a joint statement to take the pressure off the president, but at that moment in my head I only had the idea of enjoying the historic milestone reached together with my teammates.

“For this reason, at all times I informed the RFEF and its different interlocutors, as well as the media and people I trust that I would not make any type of individual or joint statement on this matter, since I understood that, if I did, I would still remove more prominence to such a special moment for my colleagues and me.

“Despite my decision, I have to state that I have been under continuous pressure to come up with a statement that could justify the act of Mr. Luis Rubiales. Not only that, but in different ways and through different people, the RFEF has pressured my environment (family, friends, colleagues, etc.) to give testimony that had little or nothing to do with my feelings.

“It is not up to me to evaluate communication and integrity practices, but I am sure that as the World Champion National Team we do not deserve such a manipulative, hostile and controlling culture. This type of incident joins a long list of situations that we players have been denouncing in recent years, so this fact, in which I have been involved, is just the straw that breaks the camel’s back and what everyone has been able to see, but attitudes like this have been part of the day-to-day life of our team for years.

“For all these reasons, I want to reinforce the position I took from the beginning, considering that I do not have to support the person who has committed this action against my will, without respecting me, at a historic moment for me and for women’s sport. from this country.

“In no case can it be my responsibility to assume the consequences of transmitting something in which I do not believe, which is why I have refused the pressures received. ZERO TOLERANCE with these behaviors. I want to close by making it very clear that although I am the one expressing these words, it is all the players in Spain and the world who have given me the strength to come out with this statement.

“Faced with such a show of disrespect and inability to recognise one’s own mistakes and assume the consequences, I have made the decision not to play for the National Team again as long as the current leaders continue. Thank you all for the messages of support and words of encouragement received. I know I am not alone and thanks to all of you we will get ahead more united. I leave this issue to the people I trust TMJ and FUTPRO and they will continue working on the next steps based on recent events.”

Image: Channel 7

Lidia Thorpe and Pauline Hanson team up for Voice to Parliament "no" campaign

Lidia Thorpe and Pauline Hanson have been forced to team up with other supporters of the "no" campaign for the Voice to Parliament vote, as they unite to construct an essay outlining their views.

The Greens senator and One Nation senator, along with other members of the Coalition, will have to navigate an obscure process to write a pamphlet which will be sent to all homes for the referendum.

The Australian Electoral Commission is seeking advice from all politicians to give guidance on the essays for the pamphlet, but tensions are already rising as senators have to decide among themselves how to navigate competing ideas and write one argument for each side.

A short 28-day deadline has already began for the essays, with the writings for each side of the campaign having to present their main argument behind their "yes" or "no" vote in less than 2000 words.

The essays for both sides will then be compiled by the AEC into an information pamphlet, which will be sent out in the months before the referendum.

The committee of those voting no will be dominated by the Coalition, but also includes One Nation, UAP’s Ralph Babet, and former Greens senator Thorpe.

The yes side is dominated by Labor but also includes the Greens, the “teal” independents, David Pocock, and the Jacqui Lambie Network, as well as some Liberals.

Hanson’s office said she would “fight tooth and nail” for input into the pamphlet, noting One Nation was the first party in parliament to officially oppose the referendum.

Thorpe’s office also told Guardian Australia she would seek to contribute to the no essay.

Resolving the views of Thorpe and Hanson, at polar extremes of the voice debate, into one essay is set to be a major challenge for the no committee, with the two senators having to agree on their views over the vote before it can be signed off on.

Albanese said the pamphlet would be “one thing that [voters] consider” but also pointed to the government’s referendum education campaigns, saying some Australians didn’t know much about the constitution, and education over the matter was key before Aussies cast their vote later this year.

Yes23 campaign director Dean Parkin said that the continued education over the Voice to Parliament vote, such as the information pamphlet presenting both sides, will help Aussies make an informed decision.

“This referendum is about uniting and bringing all Australians together, and that’s where our efforts will be focused over the coming months. We have a lot of faith in the decency of Australian people, and we know they want outcomes to be better for us, and want to see practical change. The voice is the means for us to do that.”

Return of the dream team: Cameron Diaz’s huge announcement

Beloved Hollywood actress Cameron Diaz is set for a massive comeback to our screens after retiring in 2014.

The Charlie’s Angels star will star alongside Jamie Foxx in a Netflix movie called Back in Action.

Foxx announced the exciting news on Twitter in the form of a three-way phone call between himself, Diaz and NFL player Tom Brady.

Brady, who earlier in the year announced his retirement from the game but retracted it a few weeks later, was advising an “anxious” Diaz on how to come back into the spotlight.

Foxx and Diaz have a quick chat where he is asking how she’s feeling, trying to calm her nerves before surprising her with Brady on the other line.

“I was talking to Jamie and he told me you need a few tips on how to un-retire. I’m relatively successful at un-retiring,” Brady says to a laughing Diaz.

“Honestly, exactly what I needed,” Diaz responds.

Cameron I hope you aren’t mad I recorded this, but no turning back now. Had to call in the GOAT to bring back another GOAT. @CameronDiaz and I are BACK IN ACTION - our new movie with @NetflixFilm. Production starting later this year!! 🦊🐐 pic.twitter.com/vyaGrUmbWb

— Jamie Foxx (@iamjamiefoxx) June 29, 2022

Foxx then jumps in to say he will leave them to it before the line ends.

There is not much yet known about the movie, but it is expected that comedian and fellow actor Seth Rogan will be directing it.

This also won’t be the first time Diaz and Foxx appeared alongside each other with the pair starring in Annie (2014) and Any Given Sunday (1999).

Diaz took a break from acting in 2014, a year before marrying rocker Benji Madden of Good Charlotte.

The couple have one child together, Raddix Madden who was born in December 2019.

After becoming a mother, Diaz did a small number of interviews speaking about whether or not she could get back into acting.

“Will I ever make a movie again? I’m not looking to, but will I? I don’t know. I have no idea,” Diaz previously said.

“Maybe, never say never, but I couldn’t imagine being a mum now where I’m at as a mother with my child at her first year to have to be on a movie set that takes 14 hours, 16 hours of my day away from my child.”

Images: Getty

Meet the women who helped Afghanistan’s women's soccer team escape

When the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, a goalkeeper for the country’s female soccer team had to make the decision whether she and her teammates should stay in their home country or leave it and their loved ones behind.

Fati, whose name and age have been withheld to protect her family’s identity, played with her teammates for years, representing an Afghanistan where women had more opportunity and freedom - and was free of the Taliban’s rule.

“I accepted that Afghanistan was over,” Fati told the BBC.

“I thought there’s no chance for living, no chance for me to go outside again and fight for my rights. No school, no media, no athletes, nothing. We were like dead bodies in our homes.

“For two weeks I never slept. I was 24 hours with my phone, trying to reach out to someone, anybody for help. All day and all night, awake, texting and searching social media.”

Fati and her teammates managed to escape, thanks to an invisible, international network of women.

Haley Carter, a 37-year-old goalkeeper, former US marine and Afghanistan’s assistant coach from 2016 to 2018, described it as a “little virtual operation running out of WhatsApp”.

“Never underestimate the power of women with smartphones,” she added.

Using WhatsApp and other encrypted messaging apps, Carter was sharing intelligence about the situation in Kabul with other marines and National Security staff in an operation dubbed ‘Digital Dunkirk’.

She had been enlisted to help Fati and the team flee by Khalida Popal, a former national team captain who left Afghanistan in 2011 because of death threats over her involvement in the sport, and has lived in Denmark since.

Khalida Popal knew time was of the essence for Fati and her teammates, and enlisted the help of Haley Carter to secure their escape. Image: Getty Images

With time not on their side, Popal knew Fati and her teammates had to act quickly, with their sporting involvements making them particularly vulnerable to Taliban investigations.

She told the team to delete their social media accounts, burn their soccer gear and bury their trophies - a decision Fati said was hard to do.

“Who wants to burn their jerseys?” she said. “I thought, if I survive, I will make [the achievements] again.”

At the same time, Carter was working to get the team onto a military plane out of Afghanistan at the earliest opportunity.

“Khalida texted all of us saying, ‘girls, be ready to leave the airport together, just one backpack each’,” Fati recalled.

“She said: ‘We can’t tell you that we are even sure that you will go inside the airport. But if you fight, you will survive’.”

When it was time to go, Fati carried as little as possible and wrote Carter’s phone number on her arm in case her phone was stolen or confiscated. Carter also told Fati that they should rotate having their phones on to preserve battery life.

At the airport, they were among thousands who had congregated with the hope of leaving - but for many, the struggle would be in vain.

“If your name was not on a list, or there wasn’t somebody inside the airport coming out to get you, you weren’t going in,” Carter said.

“So we had to work extra hard to make sure that marine counterparts at the gates had their information to make sure that they could get in.”

Carter told Fati to meet “a guy” at the airport’s north gate with a password that would get them in.

When they were turned back, Carter had to recalibrate the plan all the way from Houston.

Meanwhile, Fati decided she and the players would try again at the south gate - though they would have to get past the two Taliban checkpoints in the way.

After being separated from her brother - who was badly beaten - at the first checkpoint and being kicked and hit herself by men with rifles at the second, Popal’s text message gave her the push to keep going forward.

“It was a thing that lighted up that darkness,” Fati said. “Suddenly, there was something telling me to get back up and I started again in a strong way.”

The team regrouped, taking advantage of a moment when the Taliban guards were distracted to make a dash for Australian soldiers at the south entrance.

“There were so many people but we managed to get past the last checkpoint,” Fati said. “We saw the Australian soldiers and shouted phrases like, ‘national team players’, ‘Australia’ and ‘football’.

“They looked at our documents and let us through.”

Along with some Afghan Paralympians, Fati and her teammates boarded a C-130 military transport plane heading to Australia.

“The plane just took off and there was just noise and the fear that we had. Looking around, there were just scared faces,” Fati said.

“I was thinking, you will never be able to see this beautiful place where you made memories and grew up. It’s your last time.”

She sent a photo and message to Carter, reading: “I made it. We made it”.

“I still can’t get my head around what they’ve been through & what they’ve come from but they just turn up to every session, always have a smile on their face”

For @gomvfc coach Hopkins, working with @AfghanWnt’s reminded him why he got into coaching.https://t.co/vf0w0B7y8g pic.twitter.com/mT7rIcRrte

— Sacha Pisani (@Sachk0) May 27, 2022

In February, Fati and her teammates trained together for the first time, after Melbourne Victory provided facilities and coaches. She described the feeling as “amazing” and a source of “new hope” for the team.

“I’ve locked those smiles in my memory. And I thought, I’m successful. We will not be lost,” she said.

Two months later, they played their first match against a local non-league team, though the backs of their jerseys had no names and just numbers out of concern for the safety of their relatives back home.

Though their chances of competing internationally in an official competition requires the backing of the Afghan Football Association and the Taliban, Fati still has hope.

“The goals instead will be for us to make the national teams of Australia or the country that we are in. Still we are Afghans and, somehow, we will be the representatives of our nationality,” Fati said.

Image: Getty Images

Making history: The first ever team to quit The Block

Producers at The Block have been forced to take swift action after two of this season’s competitors have quit the show only a few days into filming.

Influencer Elle Ferguson and fiancé, former AFL player Joel Patfull, have had to leave the season as Joel’s mother suffered a nasty fall.

Patfull, formerly of the GWS Giants, and fashion and beauty blogger Ferguson have reportedly made their way to Adelaide. Trish, Patfull's mother, is receiving treatment for possible bleeding of the brain, a broken coccyx and a fractured wrist.

“Wherever you are in the world. Whatever you are doing. Family always comes first,” Ferguson wrote on her Instagram Stories yesterday, sharing photos of the couple travelling back to Adelaide.

Their departure comes just days into filming, leaving The Block one couple down for this season. However, in a statement today, a Nine spokesperson confirmed that a replacement couple have already been cast.

“Over the weekend, we were surprised to have one of our new contestant teams depart The Block a few days into filming for the upcoming season. We wish them all the best for the future and we’re excited to have cast two new Aussies for the opportunity of a lifetime on The Block. The Block Tree Change will air as scheduled later this year,” the statement read.

The couple’s departure is the first time in the history of The Block that a team have quit the show.

It’s been a bumpy start for what will be a very different season this year, especially after filming on the season was stopped before it even got started earlier this month.

It was reported that on April 6th, filming had to be pushed back when one contestant was positive for Covid the day before the shoot was set to begin.

Spending the last 17 seasons transforming inner-city Melbourne properties, for the first time the show will be heading to a regional location, in Gisborne South near the Macedon Ranges. This time around contestants will be tasked with transforming country homes.

Host Scott Cam is also expected to renovate his own Block property on the show for the first time.

Image: Instagram

He was definitely asked, and I think he and Lleyton have a good relationship, but he just wasn’t available for this time.”

At the time that the squad was announced, Hewitt had nothing but praise for Kokkinakis, who will have the chance to compete in both the singles and doubles after claiming his maiden ATP Tour singles title at the Adelaide International prior to his Australian Open win.

“Thanasi had a fantastic Australian summer,” Hewitt said.

“He really cemented himself as a top 100 player again, winning his first title at home in Adelaide and beating quality players. And then to go on to win the Australian Open doubles, this is going to give him a lot of confidence heading into this tie.”

Australia will qualify for the Davis Cup Finals, held at the end of the year, if the team defeats Hungary during their match in Sydney on March 4 and 5.

Image: @k1ngkyrg1os (Instagram)
