Will watching the Olympic Games make you eat more?

Birau Mia, EM Lyon Business School and Carolina O.C. Werle, Grenoble École de Management (GEM)

Ever wondered why you reach for a snack after hitting the gym? Research shows that physical exercise often leads to increased food consumption, whether it is treating yourself for a job well done or replenishing the energy you have burned. With countless sports events airing and our screens constantly filled with sports’ competitions, a new question arises: Can watching sports on a screen also influence how much we eat?

The answer is yes. Our research co-authored with Jannine Lasaleta reveals that watching sports’ videos can increase candy consumption. But there is more to the story: the difficulty of the sports you are watching plays a crucial role in these effects.

From screens to junk food

We first invited 112 students to the Grenoble Ecole de Management experimental lab to watch a video and test some candies. Half of the students watched a video with men and women playing sports, while the other half watched one without any physical activity. We then gave each student a 70g cup of candy and asked them to judge its quality for three minutes. The students who saw the sports’ video ate more candy than those who saw the one without physical activity.

Our initial test thus revealed that watching sports’ videos can boost candy consumption, but here’s the twist: male students indulged in far more candy than female students, so maybe the results were triggered by males’ consumption. Plus, we were still unsure if the type of sport watched affects the candy intake.

To learn more, we invited just the female students to watch videos portraying either easy (light running) or difficult-to-perform sports (athletics long jump, gymnastics, baseball, rugby or rock climbing). After, the students were invited to test the same candies as before. Students who watched the easy sports video (showing a woman and a man running through different landscapes) ate much more candy (30.1 grams) than those who watched the difficult sports video (18 grams).

We can thus conclude that the ease or difficulty of the exercise shown significantly impacts candy consumption – watching easy-to-perform sports leads to considerably higher candy intake than watching difficult ones.

Why is this happening?

To explain our findings, we looked at research on goal motivation. When people feel they are not meeting a goal, they push harder; but once they see progress, they tend to slack off. For example, after a workout, those aiming to stay fit might feel they have made good progress and then ease up on their efforts. This can lead to a drop in motivation to pursue related goals, like healthy eating. Research shows that achieving smaller goals (like exercising) can make people feel they have earned a break, which can result in indulging more in food. So completing a workout might make you more likely to reward yourself with extra food than if you had not finished your session. And why are women more susceptible to the phenomenon of eating more candy after watching an easy-to-perform sports video? Simply because it has been long shown that women are more concerned with their weight than men and therefore their dieting goals are more salient.

Our research suggests that merely watching sports can lead to a sense of vicarious fulfilment of fitness goals. When people can picture themselves doing the activity they are watching, they feel as though they have already exercised, which can lead to more-indulgent food choices. If they perceive the exercise shown as easy rather than difficult, they can more easily imagine themselves doing it, leading to greater feelings of progress toward their fitness goals. This perceived achievement can make them feel they have earned the right to indulge and influence their search for a reward, often resulting in increased food intake.

So what?

This knowledge can be used by policymakers or marketers who aim to encourage healthful lifestyles. When promoting healthy activities by picturing physical activity that seems too easy, people may feel a greater sense of achievement that could backfire and lead to increased consumption. We suggest showing an easy exercise (like walking or jogging) followed by a tougher one (like sprinting or marathon running) as an alternative solution. This approach can motivate people to start with basic exercises while reminding that there is still a long way to go to reach their fitness goals. This strategy could offer an alternative to promote physical activity without giving a false sense of accomplishment.

So what is the takeaway for us? Be mindful of how watching sports can affect our eating habits. If you are aiming to stay on track with your diet, watch more challenging sports – it might just help you resist that extra chocolate bar. Moreover, when setting dieting goals, remind yourself that real progress comes from consistent effort, not just imagining yourself doing a workout. Engage in activities that genuinely challenge you, and pair them with mindful eating habits. This way, you can avoid the trap of feeling the fitness goal to be prematurely accomplished and then overindulging.

In conclusion, should you watch the Olympic games if you want to keep up with your diet? Of course, but it might be better to choose the physical activities you find the most difficult to perform – and watch them without moderation.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. I just didn’t know if I’d be able to do it justice, to give the show what it needed because there was so much grief attached to that kitchen."

Daryl Somers drops big hint over Hey Hey It's Saturday tour

Daryl Somers, 72, was named Victorian of the Year during a ceremony at Melbourne Town Hall on Monday.

During his speech, the TV veteran revealed that he was "serious" about touring highlights from his iconic show, Hey Hey It's Saturday.

“I’m seriously considering going out and touring with the archives because we’ve digitised well over 20 years worth of Hey Hey,” Somers revealed.

“There are some marvellous backstories to things that happened over that time.”

The presenter accepted the honour for his charitable contributions and services to entertainment, after a nearly 30 year career on the show, which ran until 1999.

He told the audience that he was a "performer at heart" and missed the excitement of live entertainment.

During his speech, he also admitted that even though it was an honour to receive the award, it had come at a difficult time, following the death of close friend and former co-star John Blackman, who served as Hey, Hey’s voiceover artist for the show.

Blackman passed away on June 4 after a battle with cancer.

“It is an honour, I’m a born-and-bred Victorian,” he said.

“You think about the highs and lows in life and this is a high for me at the end of a rather solemn week.

“Last week, we laid to rest my dear friend John Blackman. John was a passionate and loyal Victorian as well.

“He is not here, but in part I’d like to dedicate this award to him because we had an endearing friendship. I love the guy – we went back over 50 years.”

Somers also thanked his team and his wife, Julie for supporting him throughout his career.

The TV veteran was also involved with plenty of charities over the years including Lost Dogs Home, Kids Under Cover and Camp Quality.

Images: Channel 9

Young woman exposes "hate" response to Origin's Welcome to Country

The young woman who delivered the Welcome to Country at the State of Origin has opened up on the "overwhelming" response to it, revealing how she has "received a lot of hate".

Savannah Fynn, 22, was invited to deliver the Welcome to Country and while it was generally well received, it also led to radio host Kyle Sandilands slamming the practice in general, saying the practice had become “overused and lost its impact”.

Since then, Fynn revealed that she has received an overwhelming amount of hate online, with some even jumping to criticise her appearance.

“I was just so worried I would stutter or mess up my words because I’d never spoken in front of that many people,” Fynn told Stellar.

“But once I finished, I felt a moment of relief. I ran straight over to my nan, obviously one of my Elders, and I gave her a big hug and a cuddle. It’s definitely an overwhelming feeling, getting all this attention. It’s not something I’m used to at all."

“I’m a very quiet person so this is a big change. Even though it’s all positive, I struggle with taking compliments and I get a bit shy. I’m kind of ready for it to die down!”

“As sad as it is, being a lighter skin colour, I’ve received a lot of hate for that,” the 22-year-old university student said.

“A lot of people have picked on the way I look, the way I speak, even coming down to having blonde hair. My hair is actually dark, I’ve just dyed it blonde."

“I think people also get very confused as to what an Acknowledgement and Welcome actually is. We’re not welcoming you to Australia; obviously you live here."

“We’re welcoming you to the traditional owners of that land and acknowledging the traditional land. And in terms of comments about overuse, I feel you have to respect everyone’s opinions, even if you may not agree."

“Being a First Nations person, I find it wonderful seeing my culture embraced. But obviously you can’t please everyone.”

Fynn is aiming to be a young role model and hopes to show “young Indigenous people that we can get up and speak”.

Pioneering TV presenter reveals terminal diagnosis live on air

Popular New Zealand TV presenter Joanna Paul-Robie has revealed she is dying of cancer. The pioneering presenter, known for her work on TV3, shared the heartbreaking news during an interview with Radio New Zealand on Friday morning.

Paul-Robie, who has been a beloved figure in the broadcasting world, made the announcement while accepting the Icon Award for her contributions to the creative industries.

“I was so touched because this award means so much to me, coming from Tauranga Moana,” she said. “But more importantly, because I am, unfortunately, dying – I have terminal cancer – and really to have this award before one posthumously gets it is an even better break. I can’t tell you the lightness, the brightness, the feeling of aroha inside me last night.”

Reflecting on her career, Paul-Robie recounted her experiences as one of the few Māori individuals on New Zealand's television screens. “The newsroom was really … it was being run by mostly a pair of middle-class, middle-aged white men who had the audacity and the balls to say ‘If it bleeds, it leads’ but these guys you know they had never been in a Māori world,” she remarked.

Starting her career at Radio New Zealand, Paul-Robie later became a newsreader for TV3 and played a significant role in establishing Māori Television in 2004, serving as a program and production manager.

During a 2011 interview with NZOnScreen, she spoke about the challenges and triumphs of setting up the network. “There’s been a handful of people in the world who have built a television station and taken it to air,” she said. “There are only a handful of people in the world who can do that and even though it nearly broke me in half on the day that we launched, I thought ‘hell we did that’. I think it is difficult for someone like me with an A-type personality to think now you have done your big thing maybe you should take it easy now.”

Paul-Robie's courage and dedication have left an indelible mark on New Zealand's broadcasting landscape. Her announcement has been met with an outpouring of support and love from colleagues, fans and the wider community, who admire her strength and resilience in the face of such a personal battle.

Images: NZOnScreen

"No disrespect": Home and Away star's swipe at Robert Irwin's Logie nomination

Home and Away veteran Lynne McGranger has taken a savage swipe at Robert Irwin, who has earned his first Gold Logie nomination.

The young wildlife warrior is among a group of Aussie TV old-hands in the running for the 2024 Gold Logie, with the 20-year-old being the youngest male ever nominated for the award.

Also battling it out for the Gold is Larry Emdur, Andy Lee, Asher Keddie, Julia Morris, Sonia Kruger, and ABC's Tony Armstrong.

The nomination comes hot on the heels of Irwin's TV debut as co-host of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me out of Here! alongside Julia Morris, as he took over from Dr Chris Brown for the 2024 season.

After Robert's nomination was announced, despite how well the new season of I'm A Celeb was received, many wondered how someone with so little TV experience could find himself in the running for the award.

One of those skeptics was Home and Away actress Lynne McGranger, who made a cheeky swipe towards Robert when commenting in support of her Channel Seven colleague Larry Emdur who is up for the award for the first time.

"I'm sorry but ol'mate Irwin has been on telly for a bloody minute!! No disrespect intended. #Lazforgold 🫶🏾🥇😍" she wrote on Larry's Instagram post, with over 300 people liking the comment.

The comment came after Larry shared a screenshot of a message he was sent, with someone congratulating him on the nomination but telling him they'd be voting for Irwin.

Lynne's rogue comment was met with mainly support from people.

"You said what everyone is thinking," one person said. "I agree 💯 #Lazforgold all the way! No disrespect intended for Irwin … Larry has my vote 🙌 he truly deserves to win 🥇," another commented.

"You have my first vote ever today, only for you Larry, for the laughter that lights up my life!" another dedicated fan said.

Lynne's comments weren't the first time someone called out Robert's nomination, after sister Bindi Irwin was quick to tease on Instagram.

Bindi took to social media to share a cheeky throwback post of her clutching her own Silver Logie in 2008, for Most Popular New Female Talent for her work in Bindi the Jungle Girl.

“Hey Australia, vote for my awesome brother so he can catch up to me 16 years later …” she captioned the post.

"At least mine's gold," Robert teased, to which Bindi replied "You haven't won it yet..." alongside a laughing emoji.

Or maybe I’ll be the next Harold Bishop and just keep popping back over the years.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Neighbours (@neighbours)

Moloney hinted at his career change saying he wanted to spend more time behind the camera and start working as a director.

As part of his new career move, he shared that he’d just finished on his first Neighbours episode as a director.

“Thank you all so much for all the love that you have shown me and Toadie over the years. For three decades, in fact. I’m going to miss you, I’m going to miss him, and I’m going to miss Erinsborough. But whatever you do, make sure you do not miss what is going to happen on Ramsay Street,” he said.

The sudden news sent fans into a tizzy, with many sharing emotional reactions to the news as they prepared to farewell a character who has been with them since the 90s.

“Omg What?! Toadie is iconic. Won’t be the same. Hopefully he comes back to Erinsborough for a visit,” wrote one viewer.

“This is so sad! I hope he keeps ‘popping back’ to the street rather than die. I am going to miss toadie,” said another.

Moloney made his Neighbours debut in 1995 as a teenager and stayed with the show until it was axed in 2022.

He was then one of the returning cast members when the show was rebooted a year later.

Image credits: Andy Barnes / FameFlynet.uk.com/Shutterstock Editorial

First lady of Australian television dies aged 92

Renowned Australian children’s presenter Dawn Kenyon has died aged 92.

Kenyon, originally Dorothy Dingwell, was born in Toowoomba in 1932 and made her TV debut in 1956, the same year that it was introduced in Australia.

She became the country's first female host of children's show, with her appearance on Captain Fortune, and was later referred to as the “first lady of Australian television”.

Known affectionately as Miss Dawn, she hosted several early Australian children's shows and became a household name with her role on Channel Seven’s Romper Room in the late 1950s, almost a decade before ABC’s Play School made its debut in 1966.

In addition to her on screen roles, she also made significant contributions behind the scenes as a producer and screenwriter.

A year after she made her TV debut, she married Fred Kenyon, a British TV engineer, and they share three children, Steven, Peter and Anne.

After her marriage she chose to step away from her presenting career and relocated to England when her husband accepted a job there.

Her legacy endured, with her friends in the media industry paying tribute to her as news broke of her death.

“Dawn was always a shining light,” Australian journalist Anita Jacoby said.

“She was so often the first to greet us, introduce us to new families, and lead us deeper into that magic of the Merry Makers,” 60 Minutes’ Jeff McMullen said.

Image: National Archives of Australia/ news.com.au

Internet icon falls asleep during interview with Karl

An interview on the Today show has gone pear-shaped after the famous guest seemed to fall asleep live on air.

Hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo were joined by Jack Karlson: the man behind the infamous “Democracy Manifest” news segment from 1991, which later became a much-loved online meme.

Karlson, who appears in the vintage news clip being arrested outside a Brisbane restaurant after enjoying what he referred to as a “succulent Chinese meal”, was joined by one of his arresting officers on the morning show to discuss the incident.

The interview kicked off and quickly went downhill, as the elderly gentlemen seemed to be having audio problems and couldn't hear Karl and Sarah's line of questioning.

Then, as the former police officer began answering questions, Karlson closed his eyes for over a minute, seemingly having a nap live on air.

Stefanovic noticed Karlson's impromptu kip, asking, “I just got a little worried there, Jack might’ve nodded off like Weekend at Bernies. You still with us, Jackie boy?”

Karlson opened his eyes and rejoined the conversation to discuss the upcoming documentary The Man Who Ate A Succulent Chinese Meal, based on Karlson’s life.

Directed by Heath Davis and co-produced by Tim Randall and Mark Dapin, author of Carnage: A Succulent Chinese Meal based on the now-viral event, the film is currently set for release in March 2025.

The video of Karlson’s arrest became an meme when it was finally uploaded to the internet in 2009.

In the video, Karlson declared while resisting arrest by police: “This is democracy manifest!”, “Get your hand off my penis!” and “What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?”

"Terrifies me": Tracy Grimshaw reveals her biggest fears around ageing

Tracy Grimshaw has headed back to TV alongside alongside Dr Nick Coatsworth in a new medical series Do You Want To Live Forever?

In an interview with 9Entertainment, the journalist explained why she chose to return to TV, after standing down from A Current Affair in 2022 following 17 years on the show.

She explained that what pulled her to the medical series was "the extreme end of longevity."

"People who shake the tree always fascinate me, particularly if they're putting their bodies on the line," she said.

"It's so new, some of this stuff... that's probably what brought me in, but we're not just going to be at that end of the whole longevity discussion.

"We're talking to people on how they can improve their quality of life and address issues that might lead to a premature death."

In the interview she also revealed her own fears on ageing, especially what she finds most terrifying about it.

"I'm not too scared about the passage of time," she began.

"The only thing that scares me about getting older is becoming feeble."

"Alzheimer's terrifies me. My brain has always been I think the best part of me, and it would be really sad to lose that."

The show itself follows four pairs of everyday Aussies, including sisters from The Block, Eliza and Liberty, husband and wife, Enver and Eliana, partners Luke and Taylor, and father and son duo Duncan and Tom, as they undergo medically supervised trials and health interventions that may provide clues to help us live longer.

Image: Channel 9

Worrying pattern of cancellations shows Australian TV's grim future

As the future of free-to-air Australian television continues to be more and more "uncertain", a worrying pattern of dozens of cancelled programs show how the industry has been in trouble for quite some time.

In recent years, dozens of seemingly popular shows have been axed across three major networks with thousands of people across the industry preparing themselves for further cancellations, pay cuts, job losses and career changes.

According to Yahoo Lifestyle, 34 shows across Seven, Nine and Ten have either been axed, put on an indefinite hiatus, or quietly removed from TV schedules with no mention of it again over the last five years.

Many Aussie TV staples such as Millionaire Hot Seat, The Bachelor, and Australian Ninja Warrior, which were all once the highest rated shows on television, have been binned due to declining viewership and dwindling ratings.

Channel Ten's The Masked Singer has also become a casualty in the TV wars, as host Dave Hughes shared that he simply hadn't received a production schedule for the new season of the show, only to discover it had been shelved.

In an attempt to breathe new life into the channels, newer shows like Shaynna Blaze’s Country Home Rescue or Kate Langbroek’s My Mum, Your Dad premiered, but have only survived for single seasons after failing to grab an audience.

Even revived classics like Big Brother, Celebrity Apprentice and Gladiators haven’t been able to survive as they now face growing competition from streaming giants like Netflix and Stan.

As the list of cancelled shows continues to grow, one seasoned lighting director, who asked to remain anonymous, told Yahoo Lifestyle that job insecurity for casts and crews is a major concern.

They said, “Every year the breaks between jobs are getting longer and longer to the point a lot of us (crew) are now leaving the industry. Ten years ago we’d be booked consistently with jobs locked in 12 months in advance for all of the networks, now everyone’s scrambling to try to get on a three-day pilot shoot. Everything is so uncertain.”

Below are all of the free-to-air shows from the last five years that haven’t been renewed.

Channel Seven

Big Brother (2001-2008, 2012-2014, 2020-2023)

SAS Australia (2020-2023)

This Is Your Life (1975-1980, 1995-2005, 2008, 2011, 2022-2023)

Blow Up (2023)

Million Dollar Island (2023)

We Interrupt This Broadcast (2023)

The Voice: Generations (2022)

Big Brother VIP (2021)

Holey Moley (2021)

Ultimate Tag (2021)

Wife Swap Australia (2012, 2021)

House Rules (2013-2020)

Plate of Origin (2020)

Pooch Perfect (2020)

Channel Nine

Millionaire Hot Seat (2009–2023)

My Mum, Your Dad (2022-2023)

The Beach House Escape (2023)

Rush (2023)

Snackmasters (2021-2022)

Australian Ninja Warrior (2017-2022)

Beauty and the Geek (2009-2014, 2021-2022)

Celebrity Apprentice (2011-2015, 2021-2022)

Country Homes Rescue (2022)

This Time Next Year (2017-2019)

Australia’s Most Identical

Channel Ten

Gladiators (1995-1996, 2008, 2024)

The Bachelor (2013-2023)

Studio 10 (2013-2023)

The Masked Singer (2019-2023)

The Traitors (2022-2023)

Would I Lie To You? Steve Price fires up over Dan Andrews' special honour

Steve Price has sparked a bitter row on-air with his co-hosts of The Project, as he spoke out against former premier Dan Andrews being named on the King’s Honours list this year.

Andrews, the former premier of Victoria who saw the state through the Covid pandemic, has been recognised on the prestigious list for his “eminent service to the people and parliament of Victoria, to public health, to policy and regulatory reform, and to infrastructure development”.

After the announcement of Andrews' upcoming recognition, Price let loose on The Project as he condemned the former premier.

“It’s got to be some sort of sick joke,” he said as he began his rant.

“Who would expect Daniel Andrews would get the highest honour that you can possibly get from the King? It’s the equivalent of a Knighthood! This is a bloke who locked Victoria up longer than anywhere else in the word. Apart from Covid, this bloke wasted 600 million dollars not holding the Commonwealth Games.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Project (@theprojecttv)

He continued, “Every infrastructure project he’s [Andrews] ticked off on is either over budget or over time. And we give him an award? I mean it is pathetic!”

“I have never heard people today so angry about something like this. Daniel Andrews should be run out of the State, not given an award. It’s pathetic!”

As co-host Waleed Aly began to share his own thoughts on the matter, Price butted in to ask, “You’re not going to defend Andrews are you?”

“Will you let me say something?” replied Aly awkwardly, as Price nodded his head.

“Premiers usually get these awards, but they don’t usually get them this quickly,” continued Aly.

“And the weird thing about this is that it isn’t for services to the State, it’s for services to health. And that makes it about the pandemic disproportionately. If this was happening in a few years, I don’t think we’d be having this conversation.”

Despite Price's claims that many were angry with the decision to award Andrews with the honour, it turns out most of the outrage was directed towards Price himself as many condemned his "embarrassing" rant.

“What criteria is The Project applying to Steve Prices opinion? The short man is a self serving blowhard that has no credible platform for his opinions. Surely in 2024 there are better options in Australia,” ranted one annoyed viewer.

A second person commented, “If it makes Steve Price mad then it’s a great decision!!” with another replying, “Like anybody should give credibility to anything Steve Price says”.

The onslaught of remarks didn’t end there, with another firing back, “Steve Price is jealous and miserable,” while a similarly annoyed viewer wrote, “Dan living rent free in Price’s head, embarrassing”.

Image credits: The Project / AMES ROSS/EPA-EFE / Shutterstock Editorial

"Pure terror": Samuel Johnson recalls infamous Logies moment with Molly Meldrum

Samuel Johnson has opened up on his long-running feud with Molly Meldrum, which began at the 2017 Logies.

Johnson appeared on 2Day FM’s Hughsey, Ed & Erin on Wednesday to reveal the brutal fallout of the infamous moment when Meldrum stormed the state during Johnson's acceptance speech and took over the microphone, giving a rambling and at times explicit speech of his own.

The win, for playing Meldrum in the two-part miniseries about his life titled Molly, came at a time when the actor had become a tireless fundraiser for cancer research after starting the Love Your Sister charity in 2012 with his sister Connie, who had been diagnosed with multiple cancers throughout her life.

However, instead of being able to use his speech to raise awareness for the charity, Meldrum instead stole the actor’s thunder and was left facing a wave of criticism over his bizarre antics.

Speaking on Wednesday, Johnson said that incident was “pure terror” and a night he’s still not forgotten about.

“I told him it was my moment not his! I was looking down at the front table. It was all the people from The Project and they all had their jaws on the floor,” he said. “It was 8 minutes of pure terror.”

Johnson, who previously claimed Meldrum’s antics at the ceremony cost the charity he had planned to plug over $1 million dollars, went to reveal the fallout of the incident, confessing that he’s not seen Meldrum since all the drama went down that infamous evening.

“I don’t hold grudges, I just can’t walk into the future with him,” he continued, suggesting that more has gone down behind the scenes than fans know about.

“There’s a lot that he’s done that I don’t say. But it’s not that I hold a grudge, it’s that I’ve moved on.”

Johnson appeared on the same radio show last year when he spoke about the feud, when Hughesy urged him to let go of his grudge against the Aussie TV legend.

“You said you would never speak to Molly again … I hate grudge holding and that’s bad for you,” Hughes bluntly told Johnson last year.

“I agree with you, I totally agree with you, but when I’ve specifically asked you not do something, and it’s a once in a lifetime moment, a moment I’ll never get back … He has breached my trust in that moment and I’m sorry, I’m not going to do the Molly sequel. I don’t think I should,” Johnson argued.

Image credits: Nine Network / 2Day FM

Robert Irwin called “hypocrite” over new TV ad appearance

Robert Irwin has faced some backlash online after appearing in a new TV ad for a classic Aussie snack.

The star appeared alongside G-Flip in an ad for Twisties, where the pair argued over what flavour should be crowned Australia’s official Twistie.

In the ad, Robert advocated for Aussies to vote for the chicken flavour, while G-Flip advocated for the cheese flavour.

“To my chookstituants. I say chicken is the people’s Twistie. Sure, cheese came first but secondborns were made to perfection, sorry Bindi,” Robert said in the ad.

“Chicken has always been the taste of our great southern land.”

Robert also posted the TV ad on his Instagram with the caption: “Repping Team Chicken in Twisties great flavour debate was not on my 2024 bingo card! But when Twisties calls, you answer. So let’s bring it home for chicken and prove team cheese wrong!”

Unfortunately, it didn't get a good response from fans, with many calling the star a "hypocrite" for advocating a meat-based product despite being an animal activist.

“This has really surprised me and I’m a little disappointed! With all the knowledge we have now of the c**p that goes into food like this, and of all people, I never thought I’d see this,” one person wrote.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Robert Irwin (@robertirwinphotography)

“For someone who loves animals it surprises me he’d be for either of these products who abuse and torture living beings,” another added.

“Why are pushing for chicken if you are such an animal lover? “He tried to kill me": Shock claims against former TV presenter

Former Channel Seven presenter Liam David Cox has appeared via audiovisual link in Sydney Downing Centre Local Court on Monday, following claims that he forcefully strangled a woman during a domestic dispute.

The woman told police that Cox had wrestled her to the ground, straddled her, and proceeded to forcefully strangle her until she lost consciousness.

“He tried to kill me,” she told police.

The court heard that police found the woman bleeding from her nose and coughing up blood, when they attended the scene.

They also found blood splattered on the bedsheets and pillows, and on tissues in the toilet. She was treated by paramedics before being hospitalised for her injuries.

The alleged incident occurred at a house in Vaucluse, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, on the night of May 4, and Cox was arrested at a hotel in Bondi Beach the following day.

Cox has spent nearly a month behind bars, and was applying for bail during the court hearing on Monday.

The court heard that the altercation occurred after he had attended a charity fundraiser with the woman where he had a few drinks before they became embroiled in a heated argument.

Magistrate Greg Grogin said the facts stated that the woman had been “the instigator” and “quite aggressive”, adding that he wasn't "victim blaming" but adding context to the “extremely serious allegations” where Cox allegedly lashed out after an “ongoing” argument.

Cox's lawyer Ben Barrack told the court the couple had clashed three times that night, and the woman had punched and kicked him in the lead up to the alleged assault.

The former TV presenter also claimed that he was acting in self-defence, but admitted that he had not used reasonable force.

His lawyer added that the woman’s allegations were “highly problematic” and emphasised she had not yet provided a statement to police about the alleged assault.

Police prosecutor Nellia Ng argued that Cox should not be granted bail because there was a risk that he would further endangered the alleged victim commit further offences, or fail to appear in court.

However, the Magistrate determined that the risks could be mitigated if Cox resided in Queensland and was barred from contacting his alleged victim.

He granted bail with strict conditions including having to surrender his passport, report to police, and abstain from contacting the woman.

“Domestic violence should not occur anywhere at any time with anybody for any reason,” Magistrate Grogin said.

“Any temptation to contact (the woman) will be a short-course way to come back before the court via AVL wearing green. You don’t need to do that.”

Image: YouTube

"Taken way too soon": TV star's brother breaks silence after shocking death

The grieving brother of slain TV star Johnny Wactor has broken his silence over his brother's untimely death.

Johnny Wactor, 37, was killed in Los Angeles in the early hours of Saturday morning when he intercepted a group of men trying to steal the catalytic converter from his vehicle, and was shot dead at the scene.

Now, Wactor's brother Grant has shared more details on the events surrounding his Johnny's death, telling People magazine that he had finished a shift working as a bartender at the time he was shot.

After his shift finished at about 3:25am local time, he walked to his car with a female co-worker when he noticed that his car had been “jacked up or lifted in some way”.

Initially, the actor thought his car was being towed away, but quickly realised the people surrounding his car were not tow-truck drivers.

Grant said his brother physically shielded his female colleague to prevent her from being hurt and had his hands up in the air when he was shot.

“He did not confront them,” he told the publication. “He did not try to stop them. He was just trying to diffuse the situation by stepping back.”

After the shooting the men fled the scene in a different car, and LAPD officer Jeff Lee said the suspects were “still outstanding”.

Grant Wactor said his family were “hoping and praying” that the killers were found and brought to justice.

“We just want (them to be found) as quickly as possible and correctly,” he said, describing his brother as “a good person”.

“He was taken way too early, and no one should be taken like this at all,” he said.

“He touched a lot of people. He believed in his core values to the end, and he lived life to the fullest the way he wanted to. And he was happy doing that.”

Image credits: Instagram / Ouzounova / Shutterstock Editorial

Major TV star's 7-year-old undergoes third open heart surgery

Jimmy Kimmel's seven-year-old son has undergone his third, and hopefully final open heart surgery after being born with congenital heart disease.

In 2017, Jimmy revealed that Billy was only three days old when had to undergo his first open heart surgery, after doctors found “a hole in the wall of the left and right side of his heart” that was preventing enough oxygen from reaching his blood.

Billy was only seven months old when he had to undergo his second open heart surgery, and over the weekend he had to undergo his third major surgery at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

A few days later, the TV host took to Instagram to share an update following his son's successful surgery.

"We went into this experience with a lot of optimism and nearly as much fear and came out with a new valve inside a happy, healthy kid," Kimmel wrote, alongside a picture of his youngest son smiling in a hospital bed.

He then thanked all the surgeons, doctors and other medical staff who "came through for us with immeasurable kindness and expertise."

"Walking around this hospital, meeting parents at their most vulnerable, children in pain and the miracle workers who do everything in their considerable power to save them is a humbling experience," Kimmel continued.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Dr Chris Brown recalls "dramatic" personal renovation disaster

Dream Home host Dr Chris Brown has revealed his own renovation fail on the latest episode of the show.

The vet turned TV star has taken on a new role where he guides six teams of aspiring renovators through the joys — and pitfalls — of house remodelling in the new Channel 7 reality show.

Speaking to 7NEWS, the star recalled the terrifying moment his home nearly fell in on itself when he was trying to build a garage.

“On my first renovation, I decided I needed a garage underneath my house,” he said, adding that he had council approval for the renovation.

“With a couple of tradies, we went about digging out the garage underneath the house, in the sand.

“We just kept on digging, digging, digging, until a rather large sound indicated the house was about to fall into the hole!

“So that’s about as dramatic as it as it gets.

“To have your house sort of falling in on itself, that was a pretty big learning curve.”

He said that the problem was solved "very quickly" with a lot of underpinning and structural support.

“A lot of those steel support posts that you can sort of wind up and down, they went in, and thankfully the house didn’t fold in half,” he said, laughing at the situation.

He added that unexpected situations like this are what make renovation shows so appealing as "there’s so much natural drama, you don’t have to fake anything."

“Choices have to be made, and it’s either the right way or the wrong way, and you only really discover that as you go along," he added.

“Sometimes it’s too late to turn back once you realise you’ve made a terrible mistake.”

Chris added that his role on the show is almost as a"coach" to the pairs, supporting them through the renovation challenges, and helping them get to the finish line.

“What these couples are going through, and just how much they put on the line to get these renovations done, is quite inspiring and quite uplifting and but also thoroughly entertaining,” he said.

Image: Seven
